Buffs Capture Islander Invite

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas ? The University of Colorado volleyball team defeated Texas Southern and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to win the Islander Holiday Inn-Emerald Beach Invitational on Saturday.

 

The Buffs rolled past TSU in three games (25-12, 25-8, 25-9) and moved past TAMUCC 25-11, 25-23, 25-11 en route to their second tournament championship of the season.

 

Seniors Lauren Schaefer and Amber Sutherland were named to the all-tournament team while Alex Buth was named the tournament's MVP.

 

The win brings CU to 6-0 on the year. This is the first time in history that CU has started a season 6-0. In 1992, CU was 4-0 to start the season.

 

The first match of the day for the Buffs was against TSU. Buth recorded 13 kills, the third time she has achieved 13 or more this season. She also added four digs.

 

Callie Webster led the Buffs in digs with 10 and Schaefer hit a team-high .833 with five kills. Kaitlyn Burkett recorded six digs.

 

Schylur Edelman scored a game-high six blocks, her highest this season. Her six blocks were more than TSU recorded in the entire match (four block assists).

 

CU dominated each set; in the first game the Buffs recorded .303 (14k-4e-33att) to TSU's .036 (7k-6e-28att). Colorado faired even better in the second game, posting a .565 (14k-1e-23att) to TSU's -.107 (5k-8e-28att).

 

In the second match of the day, Edelman, Schaefer and Sutherland each led the Buffs with nine kills against the Islanders and Buth added eight. CU hit .268 (41k-11e-112att) against TAMUCC and held the Islanders to a .075 attack percentage (31k-22e-120att).

 

Schaefer led the Buffs with five blocks while Edelman added four. CU put up 9.0 in the match compared to 0.0 by the Islanders.

 

Webster led CU's passers with 17 digs and Sutherland put up another double-digit performance with 11.

 

Colorado will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 10 to host the Colorado Invitational at the Coors Events Center. The Buffs take on instate rival No. 17 Colorado State on Sept. 10, No. 8 Florida on Thursday and North Carolina on Saturday. All matches are set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
