Golfers Take Sixth; Texas Tech Wins Heather Farr

October 06, 2009 | Women's Golf

ERIE - The University of Colorado women's golf team jumped up a pair of spots in the standings and settled for a sixth place finish here Tuesday in its own CU Heather Farr Memorial.

Texas Tech (882) took the team title with a decisive 12-stroke lead over Nebraska.  The Huskers used a tournament-low 288 in the final round to propel them into second place with an 894 total.  San Diego State (901), Colorado State (908), and Minnesota (910) rounded out the top five.

Colorado missed the top-five by just four strokes and finished in sixth place.  The Buffs carded a 302-304-308-914 scorecard.

"We definitely toughed it out in the second round in the extreme conditions, but unfortunately we weren't able to get the entire team playing as well as they would have liked today," said head coach Anne Kelly.  "I am very pleased with Emily Talley, she's been very consistent for us and eighth in this field is an ultimate finish.  Julie Kim also fired a 1-over 73 today which included a great finish to her round, which was great to see since that's an area that she's been working to improve."

In the individual competition, Alex Gibson of Texas Tech led wire-to-wire and finished with a five-stroke victory over Kasey Claussen of Colorado State.  She was 3-under after two rounds and wrapped up with an even-par 72 to finish the tournament with a 213 total.  She was followed by Klaussen  (218), and Rosalyn Kim of Texas Tech (220) for the top-three spots in the tournament.

Colorado's Emily Talley recorded her first top-10 finish of the season, as she carded a 75-74-74-223 (7-over) scorecard and finished in a tie for eighth place individually.  She was followed by senior Julie Kim who finished strong and jumped up almost 20 places in the individual standings.  Kim shot 79-76-73-228 and finished in a tie for 22nd.

"I personally like playing in tougher conditions," said Talley.  "I'm not always an under-par player and I know how to shoot par in any circumstance.  When it's harder for everyone else, I try and make it work to my advantage.

"It's nice to finally break the ice and crack the top-10 but I need continue to step it up."

Senior Dominique Pytlewski finished with a three-round total of 231, good for a tie for 34th, while Christine Kim (235) took 48th.  Sophomore Meaghan Kari carded a 240 total and rounded out the team scoring with a 68th place finish.

Colorado's "B" team finished ahead of four teams in the tournament and took 16th in the event.  Stephanie Simich led the foursome in 42nd place, with a 223 final score.  Taylor Doyle (240), Jamie Befort (244), and Devin Dougherty (244) were the other three B-team competitors.

The Buffaloes will have just under three weeks to prepare for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 26-27 in Boulder City, Nev.
