Women's Golf In 11th At LSU Classic

March 13, 2009 | Women's Golf

BATON ROUGE ? The University of Colorado women's golf team teed off for the first time this spring without the company of rain here Friday at the LSU Golf Classic where the Buffs are currently in a tie for 11th place after one round of play.

“We finally played our first round of golf this spring without rain,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “This is one of the toughest fields we've played in so far this year.  There are a lot of great teams here.  It's a great facility, a nice golf course and it's a very good experience for us to play in this tournament.”

Wake Forest leads the tournament with a first round score of 284 (-4), while the Buffaloes shot 296 (+8).  Virginia's Calle Nielson leads the individual field with a tournament-low 67 (-5).

Buffalo junior Christine Kim leads the way for CU individually, as she posted a round one total of 72 to put her in a tie for 16th place.  Kim, with the help of three birdies on the front nine to compensate for three bogeys on the back nine, finished the day to par.  Starting the round on the ninth hole, Kim knew she had to make up ground on the front nine and closed out her first round with back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight.

“The course was in really good shape and I was able to shoot a good round,” said Kim.  “I felt really good and hit the ball pretty well today.  I had a few errors on the front nine but I finished with two birdies so that was good.”

Christine Kim played quite well and birdied the last two holes and she was really a bright spot for us today,” added coach Kelly.

Fellow junior Julie Kim followed right behind, recording a two-over 74.  Kim played 14 holes to par, with a lone birdie, which proved to be a rather consistent round to wrap up day one in a tie for 39th individually.

Freshman Emily Talley and sophomore Stephanie Simich followed the Kim's by one stroke, carding three-over 75's, good for 50th individually.  Junior Dominique Pytlewski rounded out the scoring for the Buffs with a first round total of 77, which puts her in a tie for 70th place.

The second round of the LSU Golf Classic will get underway Saturday morning at 8 a.m. CT.  Fans who wish to follow the action can visit www.golfstat.com.

“If we can just get somebody to step up and turn one of those 74's or 75's into a 68, which we're capable of, we'll be right where we should be,” added Kelly.  “The ball striking overall for the team was very good but we just have to start making more birdies.  It's a strong field so if we can shoot a couple of good rounds it will do us a lot of good.”
