SJSU Wins, CU 11th at MountainView Collegiate
March 29, 2009 | Women's Golf
TUCSON ? The University of Colorado women's golf team did not have the moving day it aimed for and the Buffs finished in a tie for 11th place in the MountainView Collegiate here Sunday. 2008 MVC runner-up San Jose State held on for an impressive nine-shot victory to claim its first-ever MVC victory.
SJSU's three round total of 866 bested UNLV's 875 to win the 11th annual event. Louisville (879), Indiana (884) and Missouri (885) round out the top-five teams.
In the individual race, San Jose State's Erica Moston (72-68-69?209) was a two-shot winner over UNLV's Cindy LaCrosse (71-69-71?211). Kansas State's Abbi Sunner shot a 67 in round three, which proved to be the lowest single-round score shot in 11-year history of the MountainView Collegiate.
After a hopeful start in the morning, Colorado never did gain the momentum it needed and after a 307 third round score the Buffs finished the weekend in a tie for 11th place.
Junior Dominique Pytlewski, despite a rough finish to her third round, managed to stay on top for the Buffaloes. Pytlewski, with a 222 three-round total, finished the weekend in a tie for 22nd place individually. Fellow junior Julie Kim led the Buffs in the final round with a third-round score of 74. Her 224 total landed her in a tie for 27th overall.
“I was hitting okay today but my putting wasn't working the way I would have liked,” said Kim. “I think the same goes for the team. We're hitting pretty good but I think that we need to work on our putts. For me, I was trying to putt and hit without thinking too much. If I'm going to miss it I'm going to miss it anyways so I was trying not to think about it too much and I think that worked out.”
Freshman Emily Talley followed close behind the pair, carding a three-round total of 226. Talley wrapped up the weekend in a tie for 35th. Sophomore Stephanie Simich (233) and junior Christine Kim (250) rounded out the scoring for the Buffs.
Lone senior Cierra Ko played as an individual for Colorado and finished in a tie for 88th. Ko, who shot an 84 in the second round, shaved off seven strokes in her final round and carded a 77 to finish the tournament.
“There's not a lot to say about today's round and really there are no excuses for our play,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “But we're looking forward to regrouping and playing in the ASU tournament which will be like a mini-national championship. This team has a lot of talent and I have the confidence that they will get back on track and perform well next week.”
While CU may not have had the performance that they had hoped for, they couldn't have asked for more support from the staff members at the MountainView golf course and all of the host families and tournament volunteers in the SaddleBrooke community.
Colorado will return to Arizona next weekend and play in the prestigious Ping/ASU Invitational on April 3-5 in Tempe, Arizona.
