Golfers Remain In 19th After Day Two Of Regionals
May 08, 2009 | Women's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team remains in 19th place in its first NCAA Western Regional here Friday after another 18 holes in the intense Arizona heat.
No. 1 ranked Arizona State added to its first round lead as the Sun Devils posted the best score in the second round, a 5-under 283, for a 20-under 556 total through 36 holes. ASU maintains the lead over No. 4 USC (572), with No. 25 UC Irvine right in there at 573.
Colorado, ranked No. 44 according to GolfStat and 16th in the region, posted a 20-over par team score of 308 and are still in 19th place, tied with Oral Roberts University. CU came out of the gate fighting and the Buffs were just 4-over as a team after nine holes, but the back nine proved to be a challenge for Colorado, and due to a lack of birdies and a handful of double-bogeys, the Buffs were unable to turn things back around.
“We played the front nine pretty well but struggled again on the back nine,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “They're trying hard and started out pretty well but unfortunately didn't finish very strong. Hopefully tomorrow we can put it all together and end on a good note.”
Freshman Emily Talley continues to pace the Buffs after carding her second-straight team-low 75 in round two. Talley, who was even through 12 holes, ran into two bogeys as she closed out the back nine, preventing her from dropping under par. Talley's 150 total puts her in a tie for 53rd place individually.
“I felt pretty confident the entire round, but I bogeyed the last two holes and I wasn't able to finish as well as I had hoped,” said Talley. “I'm happy with how I'm playing and hitting the ball, and I know we could all be playing better as a whole and be in a better position in the standings, but now all we just have to make sure that we come out tomorrow and play the best that we can.”
Junior Julie Kim was one of three Buffs that showed improvement in round two. Kim played a team-high 12 holes to par and finished the day with a 4-over 76. Managing to cut one stroke off from yesterday's round, Kim is now tied for 67th place.
Fellow junior Christine Kim, who shot a 76 in round one, was just 3-over with four holes left to play, but a pair of double-bogeys over the final four holes caused her to close the day at 7-over to complete a 76-79?155 scorecard.
Sophomore Stephanie Simich and junior Dominique Pytlewski showed the most improvement on day two, as the pair rounded out the scoring for the Buffs. Pytlewski shaved 11 strokes of her round one score and recorded a 6-over 78 on day two. Playing the first six-straight holes to par, followed by a birdie and a bogey, Pytlewski was even through 11 holes before an unfortunate string of bogeys plagued the remainder of her back nine.
Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda used a 4-under 68 in the second round to take over the individual lead. She played just about a perfect round, scoring five birdies and 13 pars en route to a 135 total through two rounds.
The third and final round begins at 8 a.m. MDT Saturday. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com. The top-eight teams out of 21 competing here in the Western Regional will join eight from both the Central and the East regionals to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals.
