Golfers Take 19th At NCAA Western Regionals
May 09, 2009 | Women's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team wrapped up its first-ever trip to the post-season and took 19th in the NCAA Western Region here Saturday.
No. 1 ranked Arizona State hung on to its second round lead and earned the team victory as the Sun Devils won with an 842 team score, which was good for a 19-stroke victory over No. 4 USC (861). LSU (868), TCU (873), UC Irvine (873), Texas (873), Arizona (876) and Pepperdine (879) join ASU in advancing to the NCAA Finals.
Freshman Emily Talley paced the Buffaloes here from start to finish, closing with her third-straight 3-over par 75 for a 225 total, as she tied for 55th overall. Talley recorded a nearly perfect round, playing 15 holes to par, including one birdie, and single bogey and triple bogey on her front nine kept her from dipping under par.
“I was playing well and making a lot of putts, but on the ninth hole I hit my drive in the water,” said Talley. “I was actually okay, and stayed positive, and then I hit it in the water again. After the water twice, I was able to two-putt but it could have been a lot worse. I didn't feel very consistent with my driver today, but I was able to pull it together for a majority of the round.”
Junior Christine Kim matched Talley in the final round, shooting a 3-over 75 to close out the Championship. Kim, who was 4-over after her front nine, played the back nine at 1-under and finished in a tie for 74th overall.
Fellow junior Julie Kim followed right behind, finishing with a 77-76-78?231 total, good for 79th individually. Sophomore Stephanie Simich carded the second-best score for CU on the day, shooting a 5-over 77, placing her in a tie for 94th. Junior Dominique Pytlewski rounded out the scoring for Colorado as she closed the weekend with a third round 80 and a 247 total.
“Today, again, the back nine gave us trouble but they hung in there really well and played a good second nine,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “Christine (Kim) and Emily (Talley) both came back with 2-under's and that really shows a lot of heart. I know they're not happy with how we finished, but they stayed tough and played with heart in difficult conditions once again with the heat. Without a lot to play for except pride today, they certainly played their hardest and represented the University of Colorado honorably.”
Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda took medalist honors, finishing with a 10-under 206 total.
“This tournament really was a lot of fun, even though we didn't finish as high as we would have liked,” said Talley. “There were a lot of big name schools and big name players and when you watch them you realize that you're really not that much different and we have the potential to shoot what they shoot. It's going to take a little more practice and time to develop and form our mental game, but after watching these teams play I can't wait to do something like that next year.”
Colorado will return all but lone senior Cierra Ko next fall. CU will boast an experienced roster with all five regulars in the scoring lineup returning in what will be coach Kelly's 13th season.
