Women's Golf 12th At New Mexico Invitational
September 19, 2009 | Women's Golf
Pepperdine, ranked 14th in the country, holds on to the team lead with a two round total of 575 and a five-stroke advantage over 24th-ranked New Mexico (580). TCU (582), UNLV (583), and Oregon (590) round out the top-five. Colorado, who came out in the morning with an 18-over 310 total, returned in the afternoon with a 4-over 296 and a 14-stroke improvement.
"We haven't been getting off to good starts in our tournaments so far, but I think it was a combination of frustration and embarrassment that really helped us execute in the afternoon," said head coach Anne Kelly. "We have some true competitors on our team. This is definitely a tough course and favors the long ball hitters."
Sophomore Emily Talley closed out the first two rounds with a score of 78 and leads all Buffs in a tie for 30th. Talley, who came out in the morning with a 5-over 78, rebounded quite strong in round two, shaving off seven strokes from her first round score and finished with a 2-under 71. Talley once again demonstrated a very consistent round, playing 14 holes to par, with three birdies and just a solo bogey.
Senior Christine Kim, who opened with a first-round 77, improved two strokes in round two and carded a 2-over 75, good for a 46th place tie individually.
"Christine was four or five over at one point in her second round and she really brought her score back and stayed competitive," said Kelly.
"I played okay today, but I know that I can still do better," said Kim. "I have been working on my iron shots and they still weren't that great today. Once I get those shots down I'll be shooting better scores."
Fellow senior Dominique Pytlewski matched Kim's two-round total and tallied a four-stroke improvement in the second round, finishing the afternoon with a 1-over 74. She is currently tied with Kim for 46th place individually, with one round left to play.
"Domi is going through major swing changes and still competing well in these tournaments, which is difficult to do."
Sophomore transfer Meaghan Kari followed behind the senior pair, with a 79-76-155 on day one. Redshirt freshman Taylor Doyle rounded out the scoring for the Buffs and carded a two-round total of 157.
Senior Julie Kim is with the Buffs squad and playing as an individual in the tournament. Kim turned in a 79-78-157 scorecard and is tied for 79th place.
"I am proud of the comeback we made, but we need to find a way to fix the fact that we have been getting off to slow starts," added Kelly. "But with that said, we're showing signs of improvement and there were a lot of positives that we can take away from today."
The final round of the tournament will get underway Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. To follow the live action, visit www.golfstat.com.
