Buffs Start Season Strong At Time Trial

September 05, 2009 | Cross Country

BOULDER? The University of Colorado cross country season has officially started and CU freshmen Joe Bosshard and Laura Tremblay have recorded their first collegiate wins at CU's Time Trial on Saturday morning.

Bosshard won the men's 8 kilometer race in 26 minutes, 46 seconds. Bosshard redshirted the 2008 season and is ready to take his next step to contribute to the team this season.

“It was a lot of fun to get out here,” Bosshard said. “We tried to narrow our lead group down to about seven or eight towards the end. It's not an all-out effort by any means, but it's a lot of fun to be out here with your teammates and finish the race together.”

Jordan Kyle, although not running in a CU jersey on Saturday, finished second in 26:48. Cameron Clayton, who was wearing the black and gold finished third with the same time.

On the women's side, Tremblay, who was not wearing a CU jersey, was the first to cross the finish of the 5.8k race in 22:52. Fellow freshman Allie McLaughlin was second with the same time.

“It was pretty good,” Tremblay said. “We had a couple of pacers all the way through.  We had the youngest person cross the finish line first, and I was lucky enough to be the youngest and stay with the group. It went really well.  It was a good pace all the way through.”

The top finisher wearing a CU uniform was junior Allison Sawyer. She finished the race in 22:53 with a fifth-place finish.

Senior Jenny Barringer also ran in the time trial for the first time since her freshman season. She wasn't out to get a great time, but more to just go out and show support for her teammates as she is fresh off finishing fifth at the IAAF World Championships while setting a 10-second personal best and American record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:12.50). Barringer finished seventh overall at the trial with a time of 22:55.

“It's exciting to come out,” Barringer said. “It's a beautiful day and the conditions were great for a run.  A bunch of women got together and were able to keep a pretty tight pack.  This is the fastest the team has ever been able to run at time trials since I've been here, so I'm really excited about the group of women.”

Barringer now has to adjust to the 6k length of the cross country course compared to her track specialty of the steeplechase which is half the distance.

“It's strange,” she said. “I remember part way through the race I thought, ?This is really long.' because I am so used to running a mile or two.  It feels so good.  It feels nice to get back out, not only on the course, but with the team.  The women are really supportive, and they have totally welcomed me back on.  It is fun to be with this group of women again.”

Colorado Head Coach Mark Wetmore was very pleased with today's results.

“This meet, annually, is really an exercise in identifying the separation between the present top nine and who isn't in the top nine,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “From that standpoint, we got that done, so it was a success.  The next thing we look for is where that break happens.  Traditionally for the men, it is right around 27 minutes and today it was at 26 minutes and 50 seconds. We sat out a couple of pretty good guys who were just not ready for this difficult course. So, my opinion is that it was an above average first race of the season.

“On the women's side, it was much better than usual.  Usually the break is 23 minutes and today they were at 22 minutes and 40 seconds, also leaving out an important person.”

The next meet of the Buffs is the Rocky Mountain Shootout on Oct. 3.
