Golfers Drop A Pair Of Matches At NGCA Match Play Championship
September 07, 2009 | Women's Golf
DAYTONA BEACH - The University of Colorado women's golf team lost a pair of matches on Monday during Consolation play at the NGCA Match Play Championship at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
"We are certainly getting needed experience and getting back into tournament mode again," said head coach Anne Kelly. "We need to get our competitive mentality going and playing on such a hard golf course against an elite field of teams is showing our players exactly where we need to be."
In the first round, the Buffaloes fell 5-0-0 to 10th-ranked Duke, a team who has notched five NCAA titles.
Sophomore Meaghan Kari was the only Buffalo to take her opponent a full 18 holes in the morning. The pair was tied through the first four holes, but Duke's Courtney Ellenbogen would bounce back and forth from 1-up to 2-up on Kari for the remainder of the round, eventually finishing 2-up for the win.
Senior Dominique Pytlewski went 1-down to Duke's Lindy Duncan on her fifth hole and managed to tie things up just two holes later. However, with two holes remaining, Pytlewski would fall to Duncan 4-and-2.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Doyle, who did not see action in yesterday's stroke play portion, stepped in for the Buffs on day two and had to face off with Duke's No. 1 golfer, Alison Whitaker. Doyle took her opponent 15 holes in her first collegiate appearance before eventually suffering a 4-and-3 defeat.
"Taylor played the No. 1 player from Duke but took her a pretty good way," said Kelly. "It was her first college round and she started off a little shaky, but eventually settled in and played some good golf. It was very nice to see her in the lineup."
Sophomore Emily Talley dropped a 7-and-6 match to the Blue Devils' Kimberly Donovan, who went 3-under just nine holes in, making it extremely difficult for Talley to close the gap. Senior Christine Kim, who was CU's top golfer in the qualifying round, dropped a 4-and-3 match to Duke's Stacey Kim.
In the afternoon round, the Buffaloes squared off with Ole Miss, and despite a few Buffs coming close to topping their opponents, in the end, the Rebels claimed the match 5-0-0.
This time around, it was Kim who was the only Buff to play all 18 holes, and after being down as much as three strokes, she managed to tie up the match with one hole left to play. Despite a late comeback, Kim was unable to keep things equalized as she bogeyed the final hole, giving Ole Miss' Ashley Lance the 1-up victory.
Kari led for nearly half of her match over Mississippi's Haley Millsap, but she slipped back on the final holes with three-straight bogeys and Millsap took the late 3-and-2 win.
Pytlewski was the only other golfer besides Kari to hold a lead in round two, as she went 1-up five holes in. Rebel golfer Sara Grantham took the lead back two holes later and held on for the eventual 3-and-2 win.
Talley's second-round match-up was all-square on three different occasions, but much like in the qualifying round, Talley ran into trouble on the back nine and dropped a 2-and-1 decision to her opponent, Kirsty Rands.
Doyle rounded out the second round for the Buffs, taking her opponent 15 holes before falling 5-and-3 to Jillian Brodd of Ole Miss.
"Everyone is disappointed with today's results, but hopefully what we take away from this is great preparation for the next few tournaments," added Kelly. "They definitely want to try and win tomorrow and leave here on a good note."
Fifteenth-seeded Colorado is matched up with 16th-seeded Central Florida in the final round, set for Tuesday morning. To follow the action live, visit www.golfstat.com.
