Buffs Fall To Tigers In Three
October 03, 2010 | Volleyball
With the loss the Buffs fall to 5-7 overall, 2-4 in the Big 12, while Missouri improves to 11-5 overall, 3-3 in the conference.
"Tonight's results are not necessarily indicative of the play throughout much of the match," coach Liz Kritza. "Each set was played pretty tightly until we had a spell of poor passing and then we simply could not score at a fast enough pace to be able to close the gap."
Kerra Schroeder led the Buffs with 12 kills and hit .344 with just one error on 32 attacks. She also picked up 10 digs for fifth career double-double. Anicia Santos also hit well, recording a .385 percentage with seven kills and two errors on 13 swings. Alyssa Valentine had the best attack percentage in the match at .667 with five kills and one error on six attacks. On a whole, the Buffs hit .264.
Megan Beckwith led Colorado with 16 digs, averaging 5.33 per set. Valentine added eight. At the net, Lindow posted a match-high four blocks, two solo and two assists.
Paola Ampudia recorded 20 kills for Missouri and Caitlyn Vann picked up 16 digs.
All three sets were battles and unfortunately had the Buffs coming up short after their passing broke down for a few points. Colorado was aggressive from the serving line to try to slow down MU's middle offense.
The first set was close and had eight ties and four lead changes. After the two were tied at 14, the Tigers went on a 7-1 run to go up 21-15. Mizzou hung on to win 25-20 despite the Buffs putting together a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 21-19. CU hit just .135 in the set with 10 kills.
The Buffs took a 5-1 lead in the second set before MU evened it out at 6-6. The two teams exchanged points up to 10-10 and then MU went up 16-11. Colorado rallied back to tied the score at 16. The score would be tied six more times (22-22) before the Tigers would put together three straight points to win 25-22. The Buffs hit much better in the frame, recording 16 kills and a .333 attack percentage. MU was held to a .319 hitting percentage with 20 kills.
Colorado took the first two points in the third set and held the lead until the Tigers took over at 7-6. MU used a 4-1 run to take an 11-7 lead and although the Buffs would keep the game close, they weren't able to fully comeback and fell 25-19. Mizzou hit a match-high .367 with 14 kills while CU once again hit .333.
The Buffs will stay on the road to face No. 13 Texas on Wednesday, October 6, in Austin, Texas. That match is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
"Playing on the road is definitely a challenge for this fairly inexperienced squad, but we will take some very poignant lessons from this tough loss to continue learning and preparing for another tough conference match on the road," Kritza said.
