Buffs Finish Second At Johnie Imes Invitational

October 05, 2010 | Women's Golf

COLUMBIA, Mo.—Junior Jessica Wallace took third and two other University of Colorado women's golfers finished in the top 10 as the 17th-ranked Buffaloes finished tied for second at the Fourth Annual University of Missouri Johnie Imes Invitational here Tuesday.

Oklahoma State won the event by 15 strokes over Colorado and Oklahoma in the 15-team field with a 1-under par score of 863.  Both Colorado and Oklahoma finished at 14-over par 878, seven strokes ahead of fourth place Florida International, whose three-round total was 885.  Wisconsin rounded out the top five with a score of 895, 31-over par.

“We played pretty well, we just didn't make many putts,” CU coach Anne Kelly said. “Oklahoma State had a great day.  You have to give it to them.  We had a lot of good quality shots but just didn't convert them into many birdies.”

Wallace shot even par on the round to hold her three-round score at 3-under par on the 6,204-yard, par-72 The Club at Old Hawthorne course, handing in a 72-69-72—213 scorecard.  She now has five rounds under par this season and seven of her nine rounds have been at or under par.

“I had a bit of an up and down type of round,” Wallace said. “I was never under par so I was just clawing through the day and trying to grind out a number.  I missed a couple putts I thought I rolled well and they didn't carry like I thought they would.”

“Jess played a good, solid round,” Kelly said.  “She missed a few putts but certainly didn't give it away.”

Junior Emily Talley finished under par for the second time this event, carding a 75-71-71—217, or 1-over par, good enough to finish seventh.  She extended her school record of streak of top 20 finishes to eight dating back to last year.  She has finished in the top 10 in six of the last seven events and in four straight, setting a new CU mark.

“She played solid,” Kelly said.  “She wasn't feeling great but she rallied like she always does and had a great round.”

Freshman Kristin Coleman (73-74-73—220) finished tied for ninth at 4-over par and likely played the most consistent for the Buffaloes, with 38 pars, seven birdies and 11 bogeys in the 56-hole event.  Throughout each round, she stayed between 1-under par and 2-over par.

“I'm just trying to play consistent,” Coleman said. “Trying to shoot for the fairways and greens, then just don't three put and get a par.  I played pretty well this week, made a few putts here and there – not as many as I would like – but pretty good.”

Sophomore Taylor Doyle (78-75-75—228) finished tied for 31st and finished her third round with two birdies, enabling the Buffs to stay even with Oklahoma down the stretch.  Freshman Jenny Coleman (80-75-78—233) finished tied for 50th and junior Meaghan Kari (80-83-84—247, playing individually, finished 80th.

Oklahoma State's Courtney McKim held of a push from teammate Victoria Park, who shot a final round 65 to catch McKim as the two finished with 4-under par's 212.  Park opened the day in 11th place.  Wallace tied Oklahoma's Ellen Mueller for third place, just one stroke back at 3-under par 213.  Florida International's Katie Mundy was the only other player under par at 2-under 214 to take fifth.

The Buffs now have two days off before the 13th Annual University of Colorado / Heather Farr Memorial Invitational, set to begin Friday and conclude Saturday at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.  Fans are welcome out to CGNC and the action will get underway both days with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

“I need to get them to school tomorrow and Thursday before we have a practice round for our tournament,” Kelly said. “We have played a lot of golf this past month, but coming home and playing at home is important.  We'll give it our all and then get some well deserved time off.”
