Wallace Sets Record, Buffs Tied For Third At Alamo Invite

November 01, 2010 | Women's Golf

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior Jess Wallace set a school record with a second-round score of 66 and the No. 17 University of Colorado women's golf team matched its first round total of 3-over par 291, but fell two spots and is tied for third entering Tuesday's final round at the 2010 Alamo Invitational, the final tournament of the Buffs' fall season.

Colorado is 6-over par 582 as a team, tied with No. 42 Texas A&M on the par 72, 6,302 yard Briggs Ranch Golf Course.  The Aggies picked up five strokes on the Buffaloes in the second round and the two Big 12 schools are one stroke behind No. 13 Tulane, who sits at 5-over par with a 581 while No. 38 TCU leads the field with a 1-under par 575 through two rounds.  The Buffaloes and Aggies hold a five stroke advantage over fifth place and No. 18 Notre Dame, who is 11-over par with a two-round total of 587.

“We're seven strokes back and haven't played that great yet,” CU coach Anne Kelly said. “Both Jess and Emily (Talley) have put great rounds together the last two days, but there's still some improvement to be made.  Tomorrow we need to go out and end the fall season on a good note.”

Wallace started her record-breaking round with a 1-under 35 on the front nine with two birdies and one bogey, and then after three pars to open the back nine, she got on fire beginning with an eagle on the par 5, 474-yard 13th hole.  She then had three birdies and two pars in the final five holes, giving her a 5-under run in the last six holes of her round.  She shot a 31 on the back nine, matching the best nine-hole mark in school history.

Her 66 is a new CU record, breaking the previous mark of 67 that four golfers have accomplished five times, including teammate Emily Talley, who has two rounds of 67, including Sunday here in the opening round.  Wallace's 6-under par round matches the school record that Talley set earlier this fall in New Mexico (a 67 on a par 73).

“I was hitting really well today,” Wallace said.  “It was probably my best ball striking in a long time.  I missed a lot of chances on the front nine, but finally started hitting those putts on the back nine and everything really came together for me the last six holes.”

Freshman Kristin Coleman shot a 2-over par 74 on the day and has a two-round total of 10-over par 154 and is tied for 50th entering the final round.  She struggled Sunday with an 80 fighting a cold, but rebounded and after opening the round with a double bogey, she played even the rest of the round, shooting 2-under on the back nine.

“Kristin looked like she was back to her old form,” Kelly said.  “She felt better and is feeling like herself again.”

Talley, a junior, shot a 4-over par 76 after shooting a 5-under par 67 in the first round.  She sits at 1-under par and is tied for third place entering the final round.  Outside a triple bogey on the 554-yard, par-5 11th hole, she shot the other 17 holes at 1-over par.  She shot even par after the triple in the last seven holes of the round with five pars, one birdie and one bogey.

“Emily couldn't get on a roll like she was yesterday,” Kelly said. “She was playing well and then had that triple bogey, but I have to give her credit for fighting back after that, which isn't easy to do.  I was proud she was able to do that.”

Freshman Tessa The put another solid round together, shooting a 3-over par 75 and giving her a two round total of 3-over par 147, good for a tie for 15th entering the final round.  She is playing in the top five rotation able to count toward team scoring for the first time, replacing sophomore Taylor Doyle, who is still recovering from a car accident last month.

“Tessa shot a solid round again,” Kelly said. “For a freshman in her first tournament that counts toward team scoring, that's really a key for us this tournament.”

Freshman Jenny Coleman is tied for 65th after a second round 79 gives her a two round total of 16-over par 160.

Wallace is just one stroke off the lead in second place, behind TCU's Brooke Beeler, who sits at 7-under par 137 after a second round 70.  Beeler was tied with Talley after the first round.  Talley is now tied for third with Tulane's Ashley McKenney at 1-under par 143.  Four players are tied for fifth place at even par through two rounds, including three Texas A&M golfers, Sarah Beth Davis, Katerina Ruzickova and Sarah Zwartynski along with TCU's Melissa Loh.

“Tomorrow, we just trying to put in a solid five-person effort,” Wallace said.  “The reason those other teams moved up on us is they got good scores from all five players.  We know as a team we can take advantage of this course in certain spots and if we put it all together we can catch up.”
