Buffs Finish Fall Season Fourth At Alamo Invitational
November 02, 2010 | Women's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Juniors Jess Wallace and Emily Talley both finished in the top five and the No. 17 University of Colorado women's golf team finished fourth at the 2010 Alamo Invitational here Tuesday with a final round 301 to give the Buffs a three round total of 19-over par 883.
The Buffs finished six strokes behind No. 38 TCU, who won with a 13-over par score of 877. No. 42 Texas A&M (880) finished at 16-over par while No. 18 Notre Dame (882) edged the Buffs by one stroke for third place with a 18-over par. After the Buffaloes, No. 13 Tulane (884) rounded out the top five, one stroke behind CU at 20-over par.
“I was a little disappointed in how we played,” CU coach Anne Kelly said. “I know we tried our best, I never question this team's heart, today just wasn't our day.”
Gusty winds of approximately 20 miles per hour dominated the day and ballooned most of the team scores. The Buffs had identical scores of 3-over par 291 in the first two rounds before shooting a 13-over par in the third round. That was still the fourth best round in the field and all but one team shot at least 10-over par or higher in the final round.
“The conditions were much tougher today,” Kelly said. There were gusty winds after two really good days. It was a really challenging day for everybody with those conditions.”
Wallace shot a 3-over par 75 to finish the tournament with a 3-under par 213. She was just one stroke behind TCU's Brooke Beeler, who finished 4-under par after also shooting a 75 in the third round. Wallace was 3-under par after three straight birdies near the half way point in her round before a five hole stretch where she was 6-over par. She rebounded to par her final two holes just one day after setting the CU record by shooting 7-under par 66 in the second round.
“Jess really had it going for a while,” Kelly said. “Then she hit a couple of errant shots that cost her. She played so well yesterday. It's always hard to play the day after you play your career best. She did play well for most of her round until that stretch.”
Talley finished the tournament tied for fourth place at 1-over par 217, posting the Buffs best round of the day at 2-over par. She opened the tournament by tying her career best with a 5-under par 67 in the first round.
Twins Jenny and Kristin Coleman both handed in 4-over par 76 scorecards while classmate Tessa The had a rough day carding a 9-over par 81. The, however, did record the second most amount of birdies in the entire field with 12 and her 4-under par performance on the par 5 holes was also the second best mark in the field.
TCU's Brooke Beeler won the event at 4-under par 212, one stroke ahead of Wallace. Notre Dame and the Buffs both had two players in the top five, as the Fighting Irish's Nicole Zhang finished third at 1-under par 215 and So-Hyun Park was tied with Talley in fourth place at 1-over par 217.
“This was a good experience for our team,” Kelly said. “We cost ourselves a few shots here and there and that probably cost us the tournament. But we never gave up, and I'm so proud of them for that. This is a special group. We will learn from what we did do well and didn't do well and get ready for the spring.”
