Texas Tech Tops Buffs After Five

November 21, 2010 | Volleyball

BOULDER - The University of Colorado volleyball team fought hard for five sets but fell 3-2 to Texas Tech University in the final home match of the 2010 season Saturday night at the Coors Events Center (21-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-16, 15-12).

The Buffaloes fall to 6-19 overall and 3-16 in Big 12 Conference contests as the Red Raiders (4-23, 2-16 Big 12) pick up their fourth win of the season and first over the Buffs in 2010.

Kerra Schroeder recorded a team-best 24 kills. She also added 14 digs in the effort. Nichole Lindow hit a team-best .281 with 11 kills and two errors on 32 swings. As a team, the Buffs hit .165 with 57 kills. Alyssa Valentine handed out 47 of CU's 54 assists.

Elysse Richardson recorded a career-high 21 digs, which also was a team-high. Valentine added another 15 digs for CU, and Megan Beckwith picked up 19 digs.

Texas Tech was led by Amanda Dowdy who recorded 34 kills with only eight errors on 75 swings giving her a hitting percentage of .360.

"Credit to Texas Tech for piecing together an aggressive attack, led by Dowdy, who we did not have an answer for tonight," head coach Liz Kritza said.

Texas Tech took charge at the beginning of the first set taking a 2-0 lead before the Buffs got on the board. The Red Raiders led 5-3 before CU went on a five-point run to put them up 8-5. The Buffs gave up one point before recording two more to give them a four point lead at 10-6, which was the largest lead of the set. The roles reversed in the middle of the set when Texas Tech went on a five-point run to give them a one point lead (12-11). The set went point-for-point before CU took a 15-14 lead and managed to remain in power for the rest of the set to win 25-21.

The second set was close from the start with the score being tied on six occasions by the time the scoreboard read 8-8. The Red Raiders went on a run to move ahead of the Buffs where they stayed for the rest of the set. The Buffs inched their way back into the game making the score 22-20 before TTU logged three more to close out the second set 25-20.

The Red Raiders led 7-6 before CU tied the score and then took an impressive 13-7 lead. The seven-point run included a Schroeder kill and block, a pair of Richardson aces and another kill slapped down by Anicia Santos. Texas Tech managed to get back into the game and tie the set at 17 before the Buffaloes went on another run to take a solid 23-17 lead. TTU put up one more before Colorado took over and finished the set 25-18.

"We must take the positives from this match and build on them as we are looking to finish the season on a high note and build for the future of this program, which is increasingly bright," Kritza said. "As we continue to allow these young players to gain valuable experience and continue to add the pieces for a championship program, we will see the progress and the results we want."

The point sequence at the beginning of the fourth set showed an even match with the two teams tied at three until Colorado rallied and took a 7-3 lead. Texas Tech fought back to even the score at 11 before taking control for the remainder of the set. CU was down 21-15 when they put up their final point before Texas Tech closed the set 25-16, which became the largest scoring difference of the match.

Texas Tech's momentum from the previous set carried over into the final set of the night. Colorado logged the first point of the set before TTU took a 3-1 lead. Texas Tech continued to lead until a Lindow kill and a Santos block evened the score at six. The Red Raiders rallied to take a 10-6 lead. The Buffaloes tried to come back as Santos and Schroeder laid down a pair of kills, but Texas Tech ended the set 15-12 securing the win for the Red Raiders.

"This was a tough way to finish out at home, but despite the loss we are celebrating our two seniors, Rosie and Kristin," Kritza said. "Their contribution to this program has been immeasurable, and we are proud that they are a part of the Colorado Volleyball family."

The Buffs travel to Kansas State on Saturday, Nov. 27 to play their final match of the 2010 season against the Wildcats at 6 p.m. MDT.
