Netters Drop Big 12 Opener

Netters Drop Big 12 Opener

March 12, 2010 | Tennis

LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Colorado women's tennis team played without two key starters and dropped their Big 12 Conference opener to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 7-0, Friday afternoon.

The No. 54 ranked Cornhuskers (11-1) rebounded from their first loss of the season back on Feb. 28 to Tulsa, swept all three doubles slots then cruised to win five of six singles matches in straight sets. CU's four-match winning streak comes to an end and fall to 7-4 overall.

The Buffaloes played without Monica Milewski and Camila Belassi, CU's No. 1 and No. 3 singles players due to disciplinary reasons not disclosed by head coach Nicole Kenneally. Without Belassi playing doubles, the Buffs were also without their No. 57 nationally ranked doubles team of Belassi/Esposito.

Milewski and Belassi have won a combined 150 singles and 134 doubles matches over their four years.

Michala Hedelund Jensen was the only CU athlete that played three sets, fell in the final set, 6-7(5), 6-0, 1-0(5).

Without their regular starting lineup that saw four match winning streaks snapped in every singles slot with the exception of No. 5 singles, the Buffs were forced to jungle the lineup that saw Melisa Esposito play the No. 1 slot for only the second time this season (0-2 in those matches). From No. 2 through No. 6, all five CU players played their respective slot for the first time this season or for the first time in their careers.

"It was great opportunity for the women to play in spots where they are not accustomed to playing," Kenneally said. "It's disappointing to lose, but Nebraska has a good team. We'll just regroup and get back on the court on Sunday at Iowa State."

Colorado, ranked No. 52 nationally, continues their Big 12 road trip playing at Iowa State on Sunday at 11 a.m. (MDT).
