Colorado Drops 59-41 Decision To No. 13 Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - On a day when two of the Big 12's biggest stars were limited by ailments, the supporting cast of Iowa State shined brighter.
Kelsey Bolte had a game-high 19 points and two others were in double digits as the No. 13 ranked Cyclones defeated Colorado 59-41 Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State's All-Big 12 point guard Alison Lacey, made a ceremonial appearance in the starting lineup for senior day, but was quickly removed from the lineup as she continues to battle an illness that kept her out of the previous game. CU's All-Big 12 star in Brittany Spears was only able to play limited minutes while coping with a sinus infection.
Spears scored eight first half points, but played just 13 minutes and none in the second half.
Colorado (13-16, 3-13 Big 12) shot just 27 percent (15-of-55) and scored a season low 41 points. The Buffaloes were just 5-of-28 (18 percent) from 3-point range.
Despite the cold shooting, the Buffaloes battled with the Cyclones (23-6, 11-5 Big 12) for most of the contest.
Kelly Jo Mullaney hit long 2-pointer with 6:56 remaining to put Colorado within six at 47-41 with 6:56 remaining in the game, but that was it for the Buffaloes as the Cyclones ended the game with a 12-0 run.
Alyssa Fressle led Colorado with 10 points. Mullaney joined Spears at eight points. Meagan Malcolm-Peck had six points and seven rebounds.
Anna Prins had 12 points for Iowa State while Chelsea Poppens had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Despite early foul trouble and chilly outside shooting, Colorado was right in it with the Cyclones for the first 20 minutes. The Buffaloes made just 29 percent from the field in the first half (8-of-28) and saw Fressle, Chucky Jeffery and Melissa MacFarlane pick up two early fouls.
To make matters worse, Iowa State took advantage with three bucket-and-one situations in the first 12 minutes. Amanda Zimmerman's 3-point play with 8:22 left gave ISU its first double-digit lead at 22-12.
Colorado made just five of its first 21 shots, but the shots the Buffaloes did hit, kept them in the contest. Malcolm-Peck, who had just five 3-pointers during the Big 12 schedule, hit two in the first half. Her second of the period sparked a 9-3 CU run that cut the ISU lead to four (28-24).
Shortly after a Bolte 3-poniter gave ISU a 28-20 lead, Spears scored on a reverse layup off a nice backdoor pass from Jeffery. Spears then picked Bolte's pocket in the ISU backcourt and scored on the fast break layup to cut the ISU lead to 28-24.
Colorado will be the No. 11 seed in the 2010 Big 12 Championship which begins on Thursday, March 11, at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The Buffaloes will play in the last game of the day, scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. MST tip, against the No. 6 seed which won't be determined until after Sunday's final regular season games, but likely will come from a grouping of Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas and Texas A&M.

Junior Brittany Spears became the fourth player in team history to score 500 points in two different seasons joining Jackie McFarland (2005-06, 2006-07 & 2007-08), Tera Bjorklund (2002-03 & 2003-04) and Lisa Van Goor (1980-81 & 1981-82).
Spears had eight points today, moving her season total to 507, which ranks 12th on CU's single-season charts.
Spears also takes over sole possession on 9th place on CU's all-time scoring list with 1,509. She entered the day tied with Erin Carson who had 1,501 from 1988-84.
Freshman Meagan Malcolm-Peck was 2-of-10 from 3-point range. She entered the day just 5-of-23 from downtown in her previous 15 Big 12 games.
Malcolm-Peck had a Big 12 best seven rebounds, her previous best was five coming in the Big 12 opener against Missouri on Jan. 9.
Alyssa Fressle had 10 points scoring in double digits for the fourth straight game, a personal best, and seven of the last eight contests.
