Buffs Finish Sixth At Big 12 Championships

April 25, 2010 | Women's Golf

NORMAN, Okla.-Sophomore Emily Talley earned her second career top five finish as the University of Colorado women's golf team maintained its position to finish sixth at the 2010 Big 12 Championships here at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Course.  Talley finished tied for fifth individually, matching the second best performance by a CU golfer at the Big 12 Championships in program history.

The team title came down to the wire, as No. 25 Texas A&M came from an 11 stroke deficit to take the conference title over No. 26 Oklahoma State.  The Aggies shot a final round 8-over par 296 to finish 32-over par over the three rounds, while the Cowgirls shot a final round of 20-over par to finish 33-over par 897 for three days.  No. 29 Texas took third place, eight strokes behind Oklahoma State at 905, with Iowa State just one stroke behind the Longhorns.  No. 43 Texas Tech finished fifth, leading a pack of six teams within nine strokes of each other.  The Red Raiders finished with a final stroke count of 913, two ahead of the sixth place Buffaloes.

"We got off to a great start and were really playing well," CU coach Anne Kelly said.  "We ran into a little problem on the 12th hole, a par-3 that was playing tough today.  That gave us some problems and we had a few issues finishing up, the 18th hole was playing tough and it did for us today.  But I'm proud with how we came out, we showed a lot of heart."

The par-3 12th and par-5 18th holes Sunday played as the two toughest holes of any day of the entire championship as both played a +.60 relative to par.  The Buffs played the 12th a combined 4-over par and the 18th a combined 5-over par.

"It was more windy than it has been all week and today it was coming from a different direction," Kelly said.  "Our ball striking was good all week, we just didn't quite make enough putts.  It's something we still need to work on."

Talley finished tied for fifth and carded a final round 3-over par 75 to finish the championship at 6-over par 222.  Her fifth place finish matches second best in CU history at the Big 12 Championships while her marks of 6-over par and 54-hole score of 222 are both new CU standards for post season play.  She placement matches Maria Persson-Gulda's fifth place finish in 2006 and both are just one spot behind Sarah Bellinger's fourth place finish in 1999.

Talley now holds two of the six top 10 finishes at the Big 12 Championships in school history and is the only player in program history to finish in the top 10 twice.  It marks her second career top five finish and fifth consecutive top 20 finish, matching the school record.  This week, she finished with 44 pars, two birdies and eight bogeys.   Her 44 pars were the most in the field by five and she played even throughout the championship on par 4 holes, tied for the second best in the field.

"It's unfortunate I didn't make more birdies than I did," Talley said.  "I was hitting my driver good and had a few up and downs, I just didn't make a lot of putts.  It took a few holes to get situated with the wind, I was scrambling a few places but for the most part I was consistent."

"To finish fifth with just two birdies means Emily was playing consistent," Kelly added.  "She is continuing to prove that she's one of the best players in the country."

Senior Christine Kim finished the final round carding a 5-over par 77 to finish tied for 24th at 14-over par.  Freshman Taylor Doyle finished tied for 28th one stroke back at 15-over par and junior Stephanie Simich was just another stroke back at 16-over par tied for 30th place.  Senior Dominique Pytlewski finished tied for 49th place at 24-over par.

Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall won the individual title by eight strokes, finishing the championship at 6-under par 210, while Baylor's Hannah Burke took second at 2-over par 218, one stroke ahead of Cowgirl Victoria Park at 3-over par 219.  Missouri's Julia Potter finished fourth at 5-over par 221, one stroke ahead of Talley and Texas A&M's Sarah Zwartynski.

The Buffs will next find out their fate for NCAAs Monday, beginning at 2 p.m. "We're right on the bubble," Kelly said.  I would've felt better if we finished fourth, but I think we have a shot at it."
