Relay Takes 17th In NCAA Semifinals
June 09, 2010 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Colorado men's 4x100-meter relay team placed 17th in the semifinals of the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday.
The Buffs ran in the third and final heat of the semifinals, taking sixth with a time of 40.35 seconds. A.J. Whitaker ran the first leg and handed off to Quinton Dodson. Kyle MacIntosh was the third leg and CU's top sprinter Jeremy Dodson served as the anchor. The Buffs were eighth when Jeremy Dodson received the baton, but he was able to make up some ground and closed well on the pack.
The top two teams from each heat advanced and two more qualified on time. Colorado had a very tough section, drawing lane two and running in the third heat against Alabama, Oklahoma, LSU, UCLA, South Carolina, Miami and Maryland-Eastern Shore. South Carolina won the heat in 39.07. Florida posted the fastest time in the semis at 38.94 and was the only team to have a sub 39.00 performance.
"I'm very proud of the relay and what they have done this year," assistant coach Drew Morano said. "They worked very hard to get to this point. This is a very young group with the exception of Jeremy and now that they have been able to taste what competing at nationals is like, I have no doubt that they will continue to work hard to get back here next year and go even further."
The relay ran the eighth best time in CU history of 39.91 at the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, Texas two weeks ago. It was the fastest mark recorded since 2008.
The NCAA Championship, which is being held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon, will continue through Saturday, June 12. The Buffs qualified five individuals besides the relay for the meet. On Thursday, Jeremy Dodson will run in the 200-meter dash semis, Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp are in the semis of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Joe Bosshard will race in the finals of the 10,000-meter run. The finals for the 200 and steeplechase are on Saturday. Richard Medina rounds out the squad and will run in the 5k finals on Saturday as well.
CBS College Sports TV will broadcast the championship live on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and CBS will show the final events on Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Live streaming for Wednesday and Thursday will be available at NCAA.com and live results will be available at flashresults.com.
