Buffs In Second At Ptarmigan To Open Season

September 14, 2010 | Women's Golf

FORT COLLINS, Colo. The University of Colorado women's golf team is in second place through two rounds here at the 2010 Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic at the Ptarmigan Country Club as the squad wrapped up the first day of the 2010-11 season.

The Buffs trail host Colorado State in its own tournament by three strokes entering Tuesday's final round.  The Rams,  led by Sarah Roening, who had a hole in one on the sixth hole in the second round, have a two-round total of 1-under par 575.  The Buffs, three shots back at 2-over par 578, hovered around the lead all day and were second to Baylor after the first round.  The Bears currently sit in fourth place (581) one shot behind third place California (579) while Illinois, Louisville and Oregon are all tied for fifth 10 strokes behind the Rams at 9-over par 585.

“It's nice to be in contention,” CU coach Anne Kelly said.  “We have very good players on this team and we're excited, but we also know they're still freshman and it's still their first tournament.  (Transfer) Jess Wallace has a lot of experience, but this is new for her, too. They're trying really hard.  Once they settle in and just have confidence in themselves and their games, they'll be fine.  We had it rolling early, and that shows what this team is capable of.  I'm really proud of Emily (Talley).  She didn't have good qualifying rounds, but this shows what kind of competitor she is.”

Junior Emily Talley led the Buffs with two sub par rounds and sits tied for third individually at 5-under par 139.  Her first round 69, or 3-under par, matched her career best round and her two rounds under par give her 11 for her career, making her the second Buff to reach 10 or more subpar rounds and she's now just one off the school record of 12 held by Dominique Pytlewski

“I felt like I proved myself again today,” Talley said. “Coach gave me a shot after two horrible rounds in qualifying, that's probably the worst I've played in four years.  But I'm glad I got the shot.  I had two consistent rounds of shooting birdies and making putts and getting my confidence back.”

Freshman Kristin Coleman started out on fire, leading the field after eight holes at 5-under par.  But then she hit the notorious par 5 16th hole and got a triple bogey and after a par on 17, she got double bogey on 18 and was back at even par.  She finished the round at 1-under par and still became just the sixth CU player to go under par in her first round at CU. Her six birdies are a CU record for a first round, as well.  She currently sits tied for 17th place at 3-over par 145.

“She had a rough hole,” Kelly said.  “Historically, that par 5 has grabbed a lot people, that's been my experience.  She showed a lot of heart to come back and play a lot of good golf after that.  She didn't let it distract her too much.”

That same hole also grabbed junior Jess Wallace, who also recorded an eight on the hole.  Other than that, she shot 2-over par the rest of the first two rounds including a 1-under par 71 in the second round.

“It's a tough hole,” Kelly said. “You can tell the girls who have played it before.  Emily and Taylor (Doyle) have seen it before.  It's visually intimidating and one mistake can cost you dearly.  It's a punishing hole.”

Wallace and sophomore Taylor Doyle are both tied for 21st individually at 5-over par 147.  Freshman Jennifer Coleman posted a pair of 80s and currently sits tied for 77th place.

The Buffs also have three players scoring individually, as Meaghan Kari is tied for 75th at 159, or 17-over par.  Senior Jamie Befort is tied for 84th at 20-over 162 while sophomore Devin Dougherty is tied for 87th at 21-over 163.

“This course is a great one to start off on, because it is really short and you know it's going to be low scoring,” Talley said. “I talked to (assistant coach) Brent (Franklin) about (being in contention).  He said 'Don't worry about what you're shooting, don't know what anybody else is doing. Know you can shoot under par and go out and shoot a good score.' ”

Play concludes Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
