Soccer Gives Everything, But Loses On PK

October 02, 2011 | Soccer

BOULDER - Colorado threw everything it had at Arizona State, but a second half penalty kick gave the Sun Devils the go-ahead goal as CU fell 1-0 at Prentup on Sunday.

After the Buffs possessed the ball for the initial 10 minutes of the game, the first half turned out to be evenly-matched, with both CU and ASU finding scoring opportunities.

"That entire game was really back-and-fourth," Kate Russell said. "Early on, they'd attack, we'd attack, they'd attack. It was a very high-paced game."

One of Arizona State's best scoring chances came 27 minutes into the game when a free kick forced CU keeper Annie Brunner out of her box. Brunner jumped up to punch the ball away, but the serve went just wide of the net.

Similarly five minutes later Colorado had a free kick that gave them the chance to score. CU's Caroline Danneberg served a ball straight to the head of Amy Barczuk who sent it wide.
After the first 45 minutes of play, each team had five shots and each keeper made two saves.

Arizona State opened the second half strong, and its efforts paid off. Just under five minutes in, the Sun Devils were awarded a penalty kick after a foul was called in the box. Sophomore Nicki Stone beat Brunner to the top left corner with her shot and put ASU up 1-0.

CU did its best to battle back. Ten minutes after the goal, Barczuk was able to free herself from a few Sun Devils and give the ball into open space where Darcy Jerman served it straight to Russell who put a hard shot straight to the chest of ASU keeper Alyssa Gillmore.

The Buffaloes continued to work hard, and earn great chances, many of them coming from corner kicks. Colorado had 12 corners to ASU's zero over the course of the match.

"We had a lot of corner kicks and a lot of scrums, but [nothing] has bounced our way and it's the hardest thing," said CU head coach Bill Hempen.

CU caught a break with 22 minutes remaining in the game when ASU's Jasmine Roth was called for a red card. The Buffs had fouled a Sun Devil on the previous play, but Roth had hit Amy Barczuk who was already on the ground.

With Roth out of the game and the Sun Devils unable to replace her, Hempen took advantage of his team's 11-on-10 situation. Hempen pulled Brunner from goal with 11 minutes left in the game and sent senior Kate Russell in net.

"I had no idea [I was going to play goalkeeper]. It was just out of the blue, but I did it."

As a keeper, Russell would be able to push up on offense and act as an additional attacker. Hempen said he had tried that tactic only once before in his coaching career, and that was his first season with the Buffs.

Russell gave her team an added boost on offense, and the ball stayed mostly in the Arizona State defensive zone. Russell went as far up as she could, acting like another forward on a CU corner kick with 1:35 left in the game.

Despite the team's best efforts, time expired and the Buffs fell in another tough match.

Hempen and Russell both said no one can say their team hasn't tried everything at this point.

"Hopefully there are a couple of more things we can try and a piece will finally fall into place for us. The intensity was there. The effort was there. We just need that final piece," Russell said.

"We will get our goals," added Hempen. "I firmly believe that."

Colorado will practice this week before leaving to take on Washington and Washington State away.
