Buffs Fall 2-1, Left Searching For First Pac-12 Win
October 07, 2011 | Soccer
SEATTLE, Wash. - Â Colorado's Anne Stuller scored her fourth goal of the season and Amy Barczuk rejoined the team from the U-23 Women's National Team camp, but the Buffs came up short against Washington on Friday night.
Washington defeated Colorado 2-1 and left the Buffs searching-again-for its first Pac-12 Conference win. Â With the loss, CU drops to 0-4 on the road and 3-7-2 overall.
We had plenty of opportunities. We had enough chances," CU head coach Bill Hempen said. "At the end of the day it's plenty of effort."
The Buffs came out playing some of their best soccer of the season early in the match.
Hempen said Colorado had strong pressure on the ball and creativity on the pitch. The team's efforts paid off when Stuller found the back of the net and gave her team a 1-0 lead.
"[Hayley Hughes] played me a great ball, an absolute terrific pass," said Stuller. Hughes' pass gave her a breakaway where she was able to tap the ball past Washington's keeper.
"Anne was very good tonight. She was hard, she was intense. She found herself with a ton of time and just tucked it in. It was a great finish for her. She was outstanding tonight as far as her intensity," added Hempen.
Colorado went into the half leading the Huskies. CU keeper Annie Brunner made three saves in the first half to preserve the first half shutout.
"I think we played very, very well in the first half. We were very deserving of being up 1-0," Hempen said.
Washington came out aggressive and got a corner kick early in the second half. Huskies leading scorer Sarah Martinez was able to find the ball from Lindsay Elston and put it away in the 47th minute to tie up the game up, 1-1.
"That was a huge momentum swing for them. We had to defend them [after that first goal]," Stuller said.
Hempen made some changes and sent Hughes up front in hopes of garnering more offensive breaks.
Martinez, however, put a damper on those plans 20 minutes later when she scored her fifth goal of the season and gave her team the 2-1 lead.
Colorado remained tough and had a chance to tie the game in the final minute of play. Kate Russell took a free kick just outside the 18 yard box but instead of taking the shot, she chipped it over a wall of Washington defenders to Hughes who sent the shot over the goal.
"I think we are just looking to finish out a game and win it," Stuller said. "Our biggest focus is playing the full 90 minutes."
Colorado will have its chance on Sunday when the team travels to Pullman, Wash., to take on Washington State at 1 p.m. The Cougars shut out Utah 2-0 on Friday and improved to 9-4-1 (3-1 Pac-12) on the season.
