Buffs Defeated By No. 1 Stanford In Tough Match
October 23, 2011 | Soccer
PALO ALTO, Calif. - After a huge victory at California on Friday, Colorado struggled to compete with No. 1 Stanford, falling 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Colorado (4-10-2 overall, 1-6-1 Pac-12) could not unseat Stanford (16-0-1 overall, 8-0 Pac-12) who remains undefeated at home, and the Cardinal showed exactly why it has held the No. 1 ranking for six consecutive weeks.
Pac-12 Conference leading scorer Lindsay Taylor took the first shot of the game and hit the crossbar just five minutes in. Stanford would take two more shots before Marjani Hing-Glover found the back of the net to put her team up 1-0, just 10 minutes into the game. Hing-Glover intercepted a pass from CU goalkeeper Kayla Millar and took the ball up before striking it 22-yards out. It was her sixth goal of the season.
"Anne [Stuller] passed the ball back to [Millar] and she kind of topped it. [Her pass] didn't go as far as she wanted," said CU head coach Bill Hempen.
Taylor, still hungry for a goal after her close chance earlier in the game, forced Millar to make a save in the 12th minute before scoring to give her team a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute. Teammate Chioma Ubogagu fed her a through-ball where she was able to hit a 12-yard shot.
"[Taylor is] a fantastic player," Hempen said. "She can shoot from anywhere she wants. She's really good."
It would be Taylor's 13th goal of the 2011 season.
Colorado got its offense going when freshman Rebecca Boggs took the first shot of the game for CU and forced Stanford keeper Emily Oliver to make a save in the 33rd minute.
Millar continued to work hard for the Buffs in net and made four saves to close out the first half. Colorado was outshot 16-2 by Stanford, with Taylor leading both teams with eight shots in the first 45 minutes.
"Being down 2-0 [at half] was good. Honestly, Kayla [Millar] made a big save with about five seconds left in the first half," Hempen said. "We weathered that storm and had a chance to regroup at halftime."
Like they have shown resilience all year, but Buffs came out fighting in the second half. Colorado's Stuller and freshman Darcy Jerman took the first two shots of the half.
Despite their efforts, Taylor came back and proved she wasn't done for the Cardinal. In the 63rd minute, Annie Case sent a long cross over the CU defense where Taylor was able to head the ball inside the back post to give her team a 3-0 lead.
Stanford switched goalies at 69:15. Lindsay Dickerson, who has only played in three games for the Cardinal this year, took over and made zero saves.
Colorado earned one goal back when senior Kate Russell was awarded a penalty kick after Stuller was brought down in the box. Russell buried the ball and kept her team alive with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game.
"We didn't stay back and defend the whole game. We certainly had our opportunities. We came to win," Hempen said.
Stanford shot any chance of the Buffs working a comeback, however, when Sydney Payne scored her fifth goal of the season and put her team up 4-1. Taylor McCann's header shot hit the crossbar and rebounded to Payne who was able to get the ball by Millar.
Though the game did not have the outcome the Buffs were hoping for, they were still able to gather some positives from the loss. Hempen said his young players were only going to get better and stronger playing against national team players like those at Stanford.
CU's Amy Barczuk, who has been a significant force for Colorado this season, played 32 minutes before leaving the game with a head injury after a collision. CU keeper Annie Brunner also sat out for the second consecutive game with an injury.
The Buffs will return to Prentup next week to play their final two home games of the 2011 campaign. CU will face UCLA on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m., then USC on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
