Buffs Finish Fourth At Juli Inkster Invitational
March 01, 2011 | Women's Golf
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 21 University of Colorado women's golf team finished fourth at the 2011 Juli Inkster/San Jose State Spartan Invitational as the tournament wrapped Tuesday here at the Almaden Golf and Country Club.
Colorado finished the final round shooting 15-over par with a score of 303 and finished the tournament with a score of 907, or 43-over par. No. 9 California took the team title with a 17-over par 881, topping No. 22 UC Davis by 18 strokes (899). No. 31 Oregon placed third, three strokes ahead of the Buffs at 40-over par 904 while No. 30 Washington rounded out the top five at 49-over par with a score of 913.
"It wasn't our best tournament, to be honest," CU coach Anne Kelly said. "We're still getting things going and figuring a few things out. But we're not even close to playing our best golf and we're still right there. Of course we're not happy or satisfied with our finish, but we are on the verge of playing very well. I'm as positive as ever about this team. There are a lot of good things we are doing, and these first few spring tournaments are all about seeing what you need to improve on to have a successful spring."
Junior Jess Wallace led the charge for the Buffaloes, shooting a final round 1-over par 73 to finish in seventh place at 7- over par 223. She played consistently throughout the round with 13 pars, two birdies and three bogeys.
"It was kind of a boring round," Wallace said. "I had a few bogeys and a couple of bridies. I was hitting the ball decent but not spectacularly, better than I did in the second round, but my putts just weren't falling. It was a grind-it-out type of score. But we came out with a top five as a team, and we know nobody played their best golf, so it shows us we can beat these teams if we're all on our games."
Freshman Jenny Coleman earned her career best finish taking home 11th individually with a 9-over par 225, missing her first top 10 finish by just one stroke. She shot a final round 74, 2-over par, and was sitting at 1-under par through 13 before a bogey and double bogey put her at 2-over and she remained even of the last three holes.
"Jenny had a great tournament," Kelly said. "Her play this week is a very positive sign. She's made a lot of improvements, especially in her short game with her chipping and putting."
Junior Emily Talley shot a final round of 4-over par 76 to finish 13-over par with a three-round total of 229. She finished 18th and saw her school-record streak of consecutive top 10 finishes come to an end at seven, but she extended her school record of consecutive top 20 finishes alive with her 12th such performance.
"Emily had a rough tournament," Kelly said. "And that will happen. She's just off a little bit. And Kristin (Coleman) is frustrated. She is a freshman and that will happen, she has been an extremely consistent player for us and I know she will get back to that."
Kristin Coleman finished tied for 28th with a final round 8-over par 80 to finish 17-over par 233. Sophomore Taylor Doyle finished the third round at 10-over par 82 and was tied for 45th at 23-over par 239 while freshman Tessa The, playing individually, shot a 15-over par 87 in the final round to finish tied for 55th at 27-over par 243.
The Buffs have another quick turnaround before seeing action again as they will travel to Gainesville, Fla., for the 2011 SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational, set for March 6-7 on the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida.
"We have a quick turnaround," Kelly said. "We will get back to Boulder tonight, do some laundry and catch up with school before taking off Friday for the east coast. We're looking forward to it, though, it's good for these players to see another part of the country and the type of golf played there. That's how you become a good player, to see a lot of different courses and circumstances. After this next tournament, we will have a few weeks to get caught up with school and get some good practice in."
"We are excited to be in tournament mode and get out and play a few here back-to-back," Wallace said. "The more we play the closer we will be to competing for these tournaments."
