Buffs Fourth After Two Rounds At MountainView

March 25, 2011 | Women's Golf

TUCSON, Ariz. - Juniors Jess Wallace and Emily Talley led the way for the No. 28 University of Colorado women's golf team, as the Buffaloes sit in fourth place here Friday after two rounds in its own remote event, the MountainView Collegiate.

The Buffaloes shot a 4-over par 292 in the first round and improved one stroke in the second round to finish the day at 7-over par 583.  No. 14 Iowa State leads the way at 7-under par 569 while No. 12 Arkansas and No. 24 Oklahoma are tied for second at 2-over par 578.  No. 39 Minnesota rounds out the top five two strokes behind the Buffs at 9-over par 595.

"Emily and Jess continue to play solid and lead the team," CU head coach Anne Kelly said.  "We saw Jenny (Coleman) and Kristin (Coleman) both have good solid rounds and we're looking for solid contributions from everyone tomorrow.  We will need a couple players to go low so we can move up the leader board."

Both Talley and Wallace shot under par in one of their rounds, Wallace was 1-under par in the first round and then even par in the second to sit tied for fourth at 1-under par 143.  Talley was 1-over par 73 in the first round and shot 1-under par 71 in the second round and is tied for seventh at even par 144.

With one round under par each, both Talley and Wallace now have eight such rounds this season, setting a new CU record.  Additionally, Wallace has six other rounds at even par, giving her 14 rounds this season at or under par in 25 rounds played to date.

"That's a pretty remarkable that we both achieved that record on the same day," Talley said. "Getting a record is always fun, and setting new ones is even better."

Wallace shot even par on the back nine in both rounds and had two birdies in each round on the front nine.   She twice got a birdie on the 494-yard, par 5 ninth hole, marking two of just 13 birdies in both rounds combined, a total of 185 competitors.

Talley had two birdies in the first round and four in the second to go with three bogeys in both rounds.  She was 3-under par at one point in the second round before holding on remain under par.

"I was three under at one point," Talley said. "The back nine is kind of hard for me.  I started off with a birdie, I was hitting my drives straight but my irons weren't putting me in the most ideal locations for birdies. When I was pretty close I took advantage of it, which was nice.  I bogeyed an easy par 5, which was my low point, it should be an easy birdie, so that could have hurt my under par round, but I was able to remain under par and kept it in red numbers for the last few holes."

Freshman Jenny Coleman shot a 4-over par 76 in the first round and then shot her first career round under par in the second round, coming in with a 1-under par 71, moving from a tie for 52nd after the first round up to a tie for 25th.   In the second round, she got a double bogey on her second hole but birdied her fourth to get back to 1-over par.  She then pared the next seven holes and got on fire with a birdie and then an eagle on the 504-yard, par 5, 15th hole to go 2-under par before holding on to remain under par for the first time as a collegian.

"Jenny proved to herself that she can shoot under par and she can shoot low rounds," Kelly said.  "Now it's just a matter of her doing that more consistently."

Freshman Kristin Coleman shot an even par 72 in the first round, her fifth round at or under par on the season and her first such round this spring.  She was tied for 13th at that point before shooting a 5-over par 77 in the second round to sit 5-over par 149 and tied for 37th.

Freshman Tessa The is 12-over par 156 after shooting 5-over par 77 and 7-over par 79 in the two rounds and is tied for 67th.  Sophomore Taylor Doyle, playing individually, shot a 9-over par 153, 3-over par 75 in the first round and 6-over par 78 in the second and is currently tied for 54th.

Iowa State's Prima Thammaraks and Arkansas' Emily Tubert lead the way individually and both are 4-under par 140 through two rounds.  Oklahoma's Ellen Mueller shot a second-round 69, the lowest in the field, to move from 24th to third at 2-under par 142, while Wallace, Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil and the Cyclones' Punpaka Phuntumabamrung are all tied for fourth at 1-under par 143.  Talley is one of five players tied at seventh at even par.  Tubert and Phuntumabamrung both shot a first round 68, which is tied for the second best round in the history of the MountainView, one shot off the all-time record of 67 by Kansas State's Abbi Sunner in the third round in 2009.

The Buffs conclude the MountainView on Saturday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.  This event is unique in that most of the teams and tournament staff stay within the community at the volunteer's houses, creating a fun and close-knit community.

"This event continues to grow," Kelly said. "It's a tribute to the community here how they support women's collegiate golf and the number of volunteers and gallery we get at the tournament."
