Von Hagen Leads Buffs At Glenn Morris

April 21, 2011 | Track and Field

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - University of Colorado junior Alex Von Hagen recorded 3,591 points on the first day of the decathlon at the Glenn Morris Combined Events meet at Jack Christiansen Track on Thursday afternoon.

Von Hagen, who is in first place overall, almost has a 200 point lead over teammate Eddie Taylor (3,394), who is in second place overall. Brock Emory is currently in third after the first five events (3,213).

Von Hagen earned a pair of first and second-place finishes during Thursday's competition. He won the long jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4.5 inches and reached a height of 6-03.50 in the high jump. Von Hagen was second in the two running events, finishing the 100-meter dash in 11.39 seconds and the 400 in 51.36. He was third in the shot put with a toss of 36-10.25.

Taylor won the 100 and 400, finishing in 11.29 and 51.13, respectively. He recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the shot put and high jump, earning personal bests in each event in the process. He threw the shot put 39-05 and jumped 6-01.25.  Emory also had a pair of second-place finishes. He had a leap of 19-07 in the long jump and a mark of 6-01.25 in the high jump. (Taylor and Emory tied for second in the high jump.) Emory also recorded a PR in the 400, running 52.60 for third place.

"Brock, Eddie and Alex all had a good day and I'm very proud," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "Overall their attitude is great for the team and I'm really excited for tomorrow to see what they will do."

Freshman Genny Mayden, who is competing in just her second heptathlon, was the top Buffalo on the women's side after the first four events. She has recorded 2,791 points while Holly Odneal is sixth overall (2,726). Katie Dreher is in eighth place (2,665).

"Genny had a ridiculous amount of PRs today and did so well," Malone said. "She had the best overall performance for the women today and did so well. The goal for her this year is to qualify for junior nationals, which is 4,500 points, so she has some work to do tomorrow, but she is well on her way to achieving that goal."

Mayden clocked a time of 15.93 in the 100-meter hurdles, the first event of the day and followed it up with a 5-02.25 clearance in the high jump. She recorded a personal best throw in the shot put at 36-10.5 and finished the day with another PR of 26.60 in the 200.

"I'm really proud of all of them," Malone said. "They are completing well and had a great first day here. Both the men and the women are all building more confidence after every meet, which is really great to see."

Emily Pearson, a volunteer assistant with CU, is in first place with 3,373 points. She won the 100-hurdles (14.11), high jump (5-07) and 200 (24.75), while placing second in the shot put (38-06.75). The 5-07 mark in the high jump tied her personal record. Pearson is currently ranked ninth in the world in the heptathlon.

The Buffs finish the meet on Friday.
