Salzmann Places 7th In the Decathlon

May 14, 2011 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Colorado junior Adam Salzmann placed seventh in the men's decathlon on Saturday afternoon at the 2011 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Salzmann recorded a personal best score of 6,899 points, besting his previous high score of 6,879.

Salzmann was in ninth place heading into the 1,500-meter run, the 10th and final event of the decathlon. He ran a smart race and won it in a personal best time of 4 minutes, 22.82 seconds to move up two positions and pick up a pair of points for the team score. The time ranks second on CU's all-time decathlon list and was just .12 seconds off the record time of 4:22.7 which was set by Mike Hill in 1974. His overall score ranks 10th in Buffalo history.

"We are pleased with Adam's performance today," coach Mark Wetmore said. "This was his first full decathlon this year.  He was able to step out in these difficult conditions and score a PR to get some points for us. It was an admirable performance."

This was Salzmann's second outdoor Big 12 honor as he placed fourth at the 2010 meet. Missouri's Lars Rise won the decathlon with 7,808 points.

Alex Von Hagen finished the meet 11th overall after collecting 6,506 points. Eddie Taylor placed 12th (6,392) and Brock Emory was 13th overall (6,179). The Buffs battled the elements over the course of the two day competition. The wind was a factor at the meet as it was gusting and swirling on and off and the temperature did not get much above 70 degrees.

The CU women went 9-10-11 in the heptathlon and all three recorded personal best scores. Katie Dreher collected 4,953 points in part to a PR of 2:18.23 in the 800 where she placed second overall. Genny Mayden placed 10th with 4,939 points, a PR of 505 points, and qualified for U.S.A. Junior Track & Field Championships in June with the score. Holly Odneal was 11th overall after putting together 4,699 points.

"Genny had a great day," Wetmore said. "We didn't bring her expecting to score. We thought there was a chance but what is significant is her progress towards the future and her multi-hundred point PR is huge."

In preliminary action Liz Tremblay advanced to the finals of the 800 for the Buffs after winning the fourth heat in 2:07.83. Tremblay took the lead in the race coming around the last turn and easily won by 10 meters. Her time was the third best overall behind KSU's Boglarka Bozzay (2:06.65) and TTU's Devin Bailey (2:06.91).

"Liz is still a novice in that event but looked today like she has been running it for a decade," Wetmore said. "It was thoughtful and business-like and got her through to tomorrow."

The final day of the championship is Sunday. The women's high jump will start at 1 p.m. and the women's 4x100-meter run will kick off the track events at 5:30 p.m. The Buffs will look to pick up some big points in the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run.

"We are looking forward to tomorrow and putting more points on the board," Wetmore said.
