Buffs Remain In 18th At NCAA Regional's
May 06, 2011 | Women's Golf
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 31 University of Colorado women's golf team moved up the leader board throughout the second round but a rough finish put the Buffaloes right back where they began the day, in a tie for 18th place at the 2011 NCAA East Regional, held here at LPGA International.
The Buffaloes shot 19-over par 307, one stroke worse than the first round, and through 36 holes are 37-over par 613 on the par-72 Legends Course playing at 6,271 yards.
Alabama leads the way and after shooting 4-under par 284 on the day, they sit at 5-under par 571 through 36 holes and are four strokes ahead of the field. On the strength of a tournament best score of 6-under par 282, North Carolina is the only other team under par at 1-under 575. Purdue is third at 4-over par 580 while Arizona State (7-over par 583), Coastal Carolina (8-over par 584) and California (9-over par 585) are bunched in spots 4-6.
In-state schools Florida State (16-over par 592) and Florida (19-over par 595) round out the top eight, which is the number of teams that will advance to the 2011 NCAA Championships. Those teams are no lock, however, as seven teams are within nine strokes of the Gators for the final spot.
“It wasn't a great day for the Buffs,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “We had somewhat of a rough start but rebounded and were playing well throughout the middle of the day, but then had an unfortunate finish. We competed hard; we're showing a lot of heart, we're just not getting anything going.”
Junior Emily Talley had the best round for the Buffaloes, shooting a 3-over par 75 and is tied for 54th individually at 7-over par 151. She was even par through 15 holes but bogeyed her final three holes of the day. Freshman Jenny Coleman shot a 4-over par 76 while her twin sister, Kristin, shot a 5-over par 77. Kristin is tied for 73rd at 9-over par 153 and Jenny is one stroke back, tied for 80th at 10-over par 154.
Junior Jess Wallace shot a 7-over par 79 and is tied for 86th at 11-over par 155. She was four over through 17 and recorded just her third triple bogey of the season on the final hole. Sophomore Taylor Doyle struggled with an 11-over par 83 in the second round and is 19-over par 163 and tied for 114th.
“Emily bogeyed her last three holes, Jess got a triple on her final hole,” Kelly said. “The good news is we are still a young team and hopefully we're learning from this, hopefully there is something we can bring away from it.”
Alabama's Stephanie Meadow shot a tournament-best 5-under par 67 in the second round and leads with a two-round total of 6-under par 138. Michigan State's Carolina Powers shot a 3-under 69 and is at 4-under 140 while California's Daniela Holmqvist and Florida State's Jessica Negron are tied for third at 2-under par 142 and there is a four-way tie for fifth at 1-under par 143.
The Regional's will conclude Saturday with the final round and the Buffs are scheduled to tee off at just after 2 p.m. ET on the 10th hole.
“Tomorrow we just need to play for pride and not give up,” Kelly said. “I know we won't, but hopefully you can get on a roll and we'll see what happens.”
