Five Singles Players Advance At KU Invite
September 16, 2011 | Tennis
Friday's play at KU is the first fall tournament for the Buffaloes featuring nine schools over the three days consisting of eight singles and two doubles brackets. In addition to the Buffaloes and the host Jayhawks, the invitational features Arkansas State, Kentucky, Missouri-Kansas City, St. Louis, South Dakota, Washington State, and Division II Nova Southeastern (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).
Ironically, Pac-12 Conference opponents, CU and Washington State did not meet in any singles and doubles matches on the first day.
In singles play, the Buffaloes were represented in six of eight singles brackets with five CU student-athletes advancing in their respective brackets. All five advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals with another playing in the consolation round.
In the singles A, B, and C brackets, all three CU sophomores of Kristina Schleich, Winde Janssens, and Carla Manzi Tenorio won in straight sets. Schleich defeated Jen Nalepa (St. Louis) 6-3, 6-2; Janssens defeated CeCe Witten (Kentucky) 6-2, 6-4; Manzi Tenorio defeated Mia Elmore (St. Louis) 6-3, 6-3.
Redshirt-sophomore Erin Sanders also advanced to the quarterfinal round defeating Alena Sergeychik (South Dakota) 6-2, 6-2 in the Singles D bracket, while freshman Ashley Tiefel, playing in her first collegiate match, earned his first career victory in Singles F rallying from a set down to edge Jess Heeps-Eriksen (Arkansas State) 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).
"I thought the team played well throughout the day and I saw some great things," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "We still have a lot to work on, but being a young team, you can definitely see their hard work of getting a year of college experience under their belts."
In doubles play, Janssens and Manzi Tenorio won a pair of matches advancing to the Doubles A semifinals getting past Milosevska/Nowland (Arkansas State) 8-6 in the first round, then holding on against KU's Hernandez/Dreyer, 9-8(6). Schleich and senior Ania Anuszkiewicz fell in their opening round match, however rallied in the consolation round defeating Soleymani/Makashov (St. Louis) 8-0.
In Doubles B, Sanders and Tiefel dropped their opening round bout, but also rallied in consolation play, shutting out St. Louis pair of Barudzic/Keifer, 8-0.
Day two begins with doubles play, followed by main draw and consolation rounds at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
