Tennis Trio Advances to KU Invite Finals

September 17, 2011 | Tennis

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A trio of University of Colorado women's tennis players advanced to the finals in their respective singles brackets, and a sophomore duo won their doubles bracket in day two of the University of Kansas Invitational on Saturday.

Saturday's play was more of the same from the first day on Friday with singles and doubles competition featuring nine schools in eight singles and two doubles brackets. Day two was marred with rain delays forcing the tournament to move inside on only five courts.

"The ladies backed up another good day of play and competed hard," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "It's good to see and we look forward to one more day. We've seen two quality days and looking for a third. I'm extremely proud and we are continuing to learn."

Earlier in the day, sophomores Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio won a pair of matches en route to the Doubles A Bracket title. The CU tandem defeated Kentucky's pair of Fox and Testerman, 9-8(7-2) in the semifinals, then later in the morning edged the hometown favorites Pezzotti/Los of Kansas, 8-6 in the finals.

In singles play, all three CU sophomores of Janssens, Manzi Tenorio, and Kristina Schleich all won their respective semifinal matches in straight sets to play to Sunday's finals. Ironically, the CU trio will all play three women from Washington State. It will be the first time over the three-day tournament the two Pac-12 schools will face off against one another.

In the Singles A Bracket, Schleich defeated KU's Karen Hernandez, 6-3, 6-2; in Singles B, Janssens beat Laura Bouet of Missouri-Kansas City, 6-0, 6-2; and in Singles C, Manzi Tenorio edged KU's Monica Pezzotti, 7-6(5), 6-0.

In Sunday's finals, CU will play Washington State in all three finals. Schleich will play senior Elisabeth Fournier; Janssens against junior Liudmila Vasilieva; and Manzi Tenorio will face off against junior Andjela Kankaras.

In addition to the Buffaloes and the host Jayhawks, the invitational also features Arkansas State, Kentucky, Missouri-Kansas City, St. Louis, South Dakota, Washington State, and Division II Nova Southeastern (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).
