February 09, 2012 | Track and Field
AMES, Iowa - Freshman Brittany Lewis placed fourth overall in the pentathlon to lead the University of Colorado at the Iowa State Classic, totaling a personal best score of 3,637 on Thursday.
Lewis had a pair of personal records in the shot put and the 800-meter run. Her toss of 36 feet, 4 ¼ inches in the shot put placed fourth overall, bettering her mark of 35-10 at the Potts Invitational on Jan. 20. Lewis also finished the 800 with a PR; crossing the finish in 2 minutes, 21.63 seconds.
She did well in the other three events too. Lewis placed 13th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.47), tied for sixth in the high jump (5-3 ¾) and was fourth in the long jump (17-7 ½).
Junior Alyssa Frank finished eighth overall with a PR of 3,547 points. She had personal bests in the 60 hurdles (9.25), shot put (35-04 ½) and 800 (2:27.90). Senior Katie Dreher also had a personal record with 3,525 points, placing ninth overall. She PR'd in the 800 after clocking a time of 2:20.47.
Junior Brianne Beemer finished the meet 13th. She tallied 2,950 points as she didn't record a mark in the high jump. Beemer did recorded the fifth fastest 60-hurdle time by a CU pentathlete, finishing in 9.01. She also raced to the third best time in pentathlon 800-meter history, winning the event in 2:15.55.
CU volunteer coach Emily Pearson won the pentathlon with 3,905 points.
On the men's side, sophomore Jason DeWitt recorded 2,706 points on the first day of action in the heptathlon. DeWitt won the high jump portion with a personal best jump of 6-09, which is also the second best jump by a CU heptathlete. He also recorded the fifth best shot put throw by a Buff in the heptathlon after a toss of 39-02 ½. Senior Eddie Taylor is in sixth place after the first day with 2,614 points. Stephen F. Austin's Andrew Plentl leads the meet with 2,877 points.
"I'm really happy with the first day of competition," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "We had several athletes record lifetime bests today and that is very exciting. Brittany's score is the best score for a freshman that I've ever coached. Bri handled herself very well after no-heighting in the high jump. She held her head up high and continued to compete just like she would have if she recorded a height.
"The men are also doing well. Jason had a great performance in the high jump with a great PR. Tomorrow should be another exciting day."
The heptathlon will conclude on Friday, February 10.
