Haug Wins Elite 89 Award For Division I Skiing
March 06, 2012 | Skiing
BOULDER-University of Colorado sophomore alpine skier Andreas Haug was named the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2012 NCAA Division I Skiing Championships.
Haug, a Business major, carries a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average and was presented with the award Tuesday evening at the annual NCAA banquet preceding the start of the championships in Bozeman.
This season, Haug has finished 10 of 12 races with four top 10 performances including a fourth place in the giant slalom at CU's Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational, and he had success here in Montana two weeks ago, hitting the podium in the GS race for the RMISA Championships. His freshman season he was named the RMISA Alpine MVP for his performance throughout the regular season and helped the Buffs win their 18th national championship.
The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, honors the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 89 Championships. It recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or older who have participated in their sport at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team and a designated traveling member of the team for the NCAA Championships. All ties are broken by number of hours complete. To date, Haug has completed 43 credit hours at CU through his first three semesters.
