ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was another successful showing for the University of Colorado women's tennis team this fall season, this time on day one of the 2013 Lobo Invitational at Linda Estes Tennis Center on Friday.
Playing in their third fall tournament of 2013, the Buffaloes went six-for-six winning all of their singles matches, then winning two of three doubles matches. CU is playing against the host Lobos, in addition to Northern Arizona, Grand Canyon, Texas-El Paso, and Texas Tech in the three-day event.
“We had a great day of tennis,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We competed hard with a number of great performances. We'll get rested up tonight and look forward to a repeat performance tomorrow.”
In the three singles draws, CU won a pair of matches in each of the draws they participated in.
In the Cherry Bracket, freshman Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and junior Julyette Steur each won their respective matches in straight sets. Ormeño Ruiz defeated Rebecca Calvillo of Texas-El Paso, 6-1, 6-4 for her team-best seventh singles triumph of the fall. Steur easily defeated Texas Tech's Samantha Czarniak, 6-3, 6-1 for her third win of the season.
In the Silver Bracket, senior Winde Janssens cruised to her 43rd career singles match victory defeating Hailey Rochin of Northern Arizona, 6-3, 6-3. All three of Janssens' wins this fall season have come in straight sets.
Sophomore Alex Aiello was the only CU player forced to three sets, prevailing with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1) win over Grand Canyon's Janaki Gunuganti. Aiello, playing in her initial season with the Buffaloes after transferring from Syracuse, won her sixth fall match.
In the Turquoise Bracket, senior Carla Manzi Tenorio had no problem with her first round match taking a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Sarah Spruch (Northern Arizona), as did junior Ashley Tiefel defeating another Lumberjacks opponent, Tatum Rochin, 6-2, 6-3.
Manzi Tenorio recorded her 43rd career singles match win, while Tiefel won her fifth on the season.
In doubles, Steur and Tiefel teamed up to edge Marie LeBlond and Daphne Visscher of Texas-El Paso, 8-5 in the opening round of the Cherry Bracket, while Manzi Tenorio and Aiello defeated Jordan Denesick and Sarah Sprunch (Northern Arizona), 8-4. It was Steur/Tiefel's third win of the fall with Aiello and Manzi Tenorio tallying their first as a pair this season.
The invite includes four flights of singles and two flights of doubles (compass draws of eight), allowing for a total of six Invite championship titles. Singles quarterfinals was played Friday, singles semifinals will be played Saturday, and the singles championship match will be played on Sunday morning.
