Buffs Come From Behind To Defeat Oregon 2-1
October 12, 2014 | Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – Junior Kahlia Hogg scored twice in the final 15 minutes of the match to lift the University of Colorado women's soccer team past the Oregon Ducks 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Colorado has won two straight and three of its last four to improve to 10-4, 3-2 Pac-12. Oregon drops to 6-5-2 and 2-2-1 in conference action.
The Buffs fell behind early after a goal by Oregon's Kristen Parr in the seventh minute. Parr received a short cross from Allie Rodriguez and found an opening in the top left corner of the net to give the Ducks a 1-0 advantage.
Oregon held the Buffs to only four shots and one on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
"We didn't play our best soccer in the first half," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "We gave up the early goal and weren't playing with the urgency and quality in the final third. Having said that, we came out with tons of energy and played better in the second half."
The Buffs responded when Hogg was able to score the equalizer in the 75th minute. Sophomore Brie Hooks received the ball from Olivia Pappalardo and sent a one-touch to Hogg in stride down the left side of the pitch. Hogg beat the Ducks' back line and before an Oregon defender could catch up she drilled home her third goal of the season. The assist was Hooks' fourth of the year and Pappalardo's second in two matches.
The contest appeared to be headed to overtime, until Hogg came through once again for the Buffs to record the game-winning goal at the 86:19 mark. Junior Madison Krauser sent a shot on goal from inside the 18 and the ball bounced off the gloves of Oregon goalkeeper Lauren Holden. Hogg was in prime position for the rebound and blasted the ball toward the goal. Oregon's Caitlyn Wong made an attempt to save the ball from crossing the goal line, but it rolled through to give Colorado the 2-1 lead.
Hogg's game-winner was her second of the year.
"It was our goal to come on the road and get the six points," said Hogg. "It is difficult when you travel. We have been on the road for two weeks now, but for us it's no excuses."
Oregon had an opportunity to increase its lead in the second half, but a goal was waived off by a penalty. Then shortly after Colorado tied the match, Scheele made a key play to fend off the Ducks' potential go-ahead goal. Shanelle Simien had the ball charging toward the goal, but Scheele challenged Simien and forced her shot to go just left of the goal post.
Colorado is 3-1 on the road in conference matches this season. The last time CU won three conference road games was 2007 when the team went 3-2.
The win also marks the first time the Buffs have swept a weekend road trip in the Pac-12 since joining the conference in 2011. Colorado defeated Oregon State 1-0 on Friday.
"To go on the road and get the result against a dangerous Oregon State team and then turn around and play an Oregon team that is playing well, it says a lot about this squad that I think their best days are ahead of them," said Sanchez. "We played very well in the second half with a big comeback today. It was a very good team effort."
The Buffs conclude their five-match road trip on Thursday, Oct. 16 against No. 3 Stanford at 7 p.m. MT. The contest will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
