Buffs Tied For Eighth At Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational
October 07, 2014 | Women's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Through 18 holes of play, the University of Colorado women's golf team is tied for eighth in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the Sahalee Country Club. The tournament, originally slated for three rounds, or 54 holes was shortened to 36 holes after fog delayed Tuesday's tee-times by four hours.
As a team, the Buffaloes shot a 303 or 15-over par. Washington, the tournament's host school leads the invitational at three-under par 285. The Huskies are the only team to post a sub-par round. Gonzaga is in second place, nine shots behind the leader at 294 or 6-over. Pac-12 Conference opponent Stanford finished round one in third, two strokes back of Gonzaga with a 296. San Jose State is 11-over par in fourth place and Columbia rounds out the top-five, shooting a 300 or 12-over par.
“We didn't play very well today,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “Everyone got off to a tough start and I really can't put my finger on why. Golf is like that where you can have an off day, and today just wasn't our day.”
Sophomore Natalie Vivaldi led the way for the Buffs posting her best individual round of the season on Tuesday with an even-par 72. She started her day going two-over par through her first eleven holes and then settled in nicely to close out her round. Vivaldi recorded three of her four birdies on the final seven holes to bring her back to even-par. She was only one of nine players in the field to shoot an even-par round or better and is tied for fifth place overall.
Esther Lee is tied for 17th with a 74 or two-over par. Lee was on a roll, shooting even-par the entire way until her last hole gave the CU sophomore some trouble. She bogeyed the par-four, eighth hole, which put her over-par for the first time all day. Despite struggling to close-out her round, Lee was second among the field in total pars with 15.
Shooting a six-over par in the first round, Jamie Oleksiew is tied for 44th. Oleksiew bogeyed her first three holes and was four-over through the first nine. She found her groove to go one-under over the next six, but then had a misstep with a triple-bogey on the par-four No. 7. The junior from Vancouver, B.C. bounced back though to par her last two holes.
Junior Alexis Keating began her round with back-to-back double-bogeys and struggled much of the day to card a seven-over par 79. She went five-over par on the back nine and then had a bogey and double-bogey on the front. Although her day proved to be difficult, she finished strong going one-under in her final five, recording one of her two birdies on the last hole. Keating is tied for 48th.
Freshman Brittany Fan also had a rollercoaster of a day, posting an eight-over par 80. After 10 holes, she was seven-over par with five bogeys and one double-bogey. She rebounded to record two birdies, but then had trouble finishing with three straight bogeys. Fan is tied for 51st entering the final round.
“We have to play with a little bit more consistency and more to our talent level,” said Kelly. “They're a good team and good players. I'm sure they'll fight their way back tomorrow."
Washington's SoonBin Kim is in first place at three-under par. The Huskies' Jennifer Yang and Eimi Koga are tied for second with Raychelle Santos from Gonzaga, each finishing with a 71 in the first round. Six players shot an even-par 72 and are tied for fifth overall.
The final round gets underway Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. MT.
