Women's Golf Finishes Fifth At Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational

October 08, 2014 | Women's Golf

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – The University of Colorado women's golf team moved up three places on Wednesday to finish fifth at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational hosted by the University of Washington at the 6,039-yard, par 72 Sahalee Country Club.

Colorado has finished in the top five in its first three events of the season for the first time since 2010-11 and for only the third time in school history.

The Buffaloes recorded the fourth best team score (305) in the final round and went 32-over par in the meet. Washington shot a 285-286—571 five-under par to win the tournament and was the only team to post a sub-par score in either round. Stanford took second, 19 strokes behind the Huskies with a 590 or 14-over par. UC Davis (301-297—598), also climbed three spots from Tuesday and finished third, eight strokes behind the Cardinal at 22-over par. The fourth place finisher Gonzaga completed the event at 30-over par, just two strokes in front of the Buffs in fifth.

“We played a little bit better today,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “But we're still not quite where we want to be. It's a tough course and we learned a lot, but like I said still not up to the standard we want to be.”

Moving up three places to finish tied for 14th was sophomore Esther Lee who carded a 74-74—148 or four-over par. In the second round, Lee struggled a bit through her first nine holes, recording three bogeys, but she bounced back to finish the front at one-under par. The Los Alamitos, Calif. native recorded two birdies in her final five holes and had 27 pars over the two-days, second most among the 63 player field.

Sophomore Natalie Vivaldi had her best finish this season, tied for 22nd despite an up and down second round. She went eight-over par on the day, recording identical scores on the front and back nine. Vivaldi had a tough start with a double-bogey on her second hole, but then went par-birdie-par over the next three. The following five holes were a bit difficult as well, as she had two more double-bogeys and one bogey. She posted a 72-80—152 in the event and had the second best overall score for the Buffaloes.

Junior Alexis Keating entered Wednesday tied for 47th and by shaving five strokes off her second round, she moved up 22 spots on the leaderboard to card a two-over par in the final 18 holes. Keating started on the back nine and went three-over par, then turned in a solid performance on the front nine, going one-under. She led the field in par-three scoring on Wednesday at three-under and finished tied for 26th overall with a 79-74—153 for the tournament.

Freshman Brittany Fan got a better feel for the course on Wednesday and improved her final round by three strokes. Fan (80-77—157) posted a 13-over par in the tournament and moved up six spots to finish tied for 45th place. She was six-over through 11, but settled down going one-under the rest of her round and had two birdies during that stretch.

Junior Jamie Oleksiew had two rough stretches on each side. She shot a final round 12-over par 84 and finished tied for 53rd at 18-over par 162. She opened her round on the back nine, going four-over par and then was eight-over par on the front with six bogeys and one double.

Washington's SooBin Kim ran away with top honors to win the tournament at eight-under par. Teammates Jennifer Yang and Eimi Koga tied for second with one-over par 145s. Four players tied for fourth, Paige Lee and Blair Lewis from UC Davis, Charlotte Thomas from Washington and Stanford's Lauren Kim at two-over par 146.

Next up for the Buffs is a trip to Kailua Kona, Hawaii for the Pac-12 Conference Fall Preview. The tournament takes place Monday, Nov. 3 and Tuesday Nov. 4.
