Albuquerque, N.M. – The University of Colorado women's tennis team rebounded from Friday's setback with a convincing 6-1 victory over Ball State, Sunday afternoon in a match played at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex in Albuquerque, N.M.
Sunday was the first meeting between the two schools on the tennis court.
The win improves the Buffaloes to 7-4 on the season, wrapping of the non-conference portion of the schedule with Pac-12 play beginning next week at Washington State (March 7) and at Oregon (March 9). CU fell to the host Lobos, 5-2 on Friday.
“I'm happy with the way we came back and competed in our second match of the weekend,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “I really like how the girls responded, especially our No. 2 doubles team of Alex (Aiello) and Carla (Manzi Tenorio) in the way they fought back from a 0-6 deficit coming back to win.”
CU claimed the doubles point taking two of three points, the seventh time this season CU has won the doubles point from the opposition. After taking the point, the Buffs then secured five of singles slots in straight sets for the team win, their fourth victory in the last five matches.
Two of the three doubles points were secured by juniors Julyette Steur and Ashley Tiefel winning their team-best 13th match of the year (ninth of the spring) taking an 8-3 winner at No. 3.
The Buffs tandem at No. 2 doubles team of Aiello and Manzi Tenorio recorded their seventh win of the year and clinched the doubles point rallying from a 6-0 deficit to take an 8-7(5) win.
With a 1-0 lead heading to singles play, the Buffs registered five of the next six slots in straight sets led by Carla Manzi Tenorio (No. 5), Nuria Ormeño Ruiz (No. 4), and Steur at No. 1 singles, who clinched the team win. Winde Janssens and Tiefel rounded out the wins at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively.
So far the dual season has been a successful one on the singles court for a number of players. On Sunday, Ormeño Ruiz and Steur each won their 16th and 15th singles matches of the year, respectively. Steur has now won five straight with Ormeño Ruiz taking three of her last five.
Janssens recorded her 50th career singles win, while Manzi Tenorio tallied her 49th career tally. The CU seniors rank No. 30 and No. 31 on the all-time school list.
