LARAMIE, Wyo. – Shaw Gifford and Emily Hunsucker combined for three first place finishes for the University of Colorado at the Cowpoke Open on Saturday.

Gifford smashed his previous records and finished first in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. In the 200, Gifford surpassed his old personal record, crossing the finish in 21.02. He also tied his personal best, established just last weekend at the Jack Christiansen Invitational (4/26).  With the wins this weekend, Gifford has now recorded six first place finishes, including three in the 200.

“Shaw [Gifford] put some things together today. He works extremely hard and it makes us all very happy for him to start seeing results from all that work,” coach Drew Morano said. “He is the first person to critique himself and point out places where he can be better. I expect more great results from him as we go into the Pac-12 meet.”

Hunsucker also finished first in the hammer throw, winning with a big 206-05 mark. Like Gifford, Hunsucker now has six first place finishes, all in the hammer throw.

At the Longhorn Invitational, Jaron Thomas competed in the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, finishing third overall in both events. In the 110 hurdles, he finished in 13.87, and in the 400 hurdles, he finished in 51.77, both of which are new personal bests for the freshman.

Jaron Thomas had a phenomenal day. He had two huge PRs in the 110 and 400 hurdles. He should be extremely proud of his accomplishments from the day. Jaron is still a freshman, so we expect him to keep getting better as he grows in the sport,” Morano said.

The Buffs will be back in action next weekend in Pullman, Wash. as the combined events athletes take on the Pac-12 Championships
