Track Trio Fails To Qualify On Day Two At NCAAs
June 12, 2014 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – A trio of University of Colorado track athletes failed to qualify for their respective finals on day two of the 2014 NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon, Thursday evening.
Junior Blake Theroux ran to an eighth place finish (8:54.70) in the second heat of the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. Theroux's finished 17th overall. In the men's steeple, two heats with the top five from each heat advanced, plus the next two times to the final.
UTEP's Anthony Rotich recorded the overall top time of 8:39.76.
The Buffaloes also missed qualifying for the 1500-meter finals as freshman Ben Saarel finished seventh in heat one with a 3:47.19 time, and junior Jake Hurysz was 10th in heat two with a 3:48.16 run. Overall, Saarel and Hurysz finished 16th and 20th, respectively.
Oregon's Mac Fleet won heat one with a time of 3:45.90, however was 10th overall. The winner of both heats was Arizona's Lawi Lalang pulling-in a 3:41.03 result. Lalang led five other runners in heat two with sub 3:41 times.
Overall, the top 12 men qualified for Saturday's final.
“After a pretty good yesterday, little bit of a let-down today with nobody advancing through,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “In the 1500, as they often can be predicted to, which means, the first of two heats, very slow and tactical, and a wild sprint at the end, in which Ben (Saarel) ended up seventh. Inevitably, the second heat goes fast and Ben did not advance. Jake (Hurysz) had an off day in the second heat of the 1500.
“Blake (Theroux) had a decent time in these conditions, little bit windy. We were hoping to get a couple people through, but we didn't, but Shalaya (Kipp) is tomorrow and Carrie (Verdon) on Saturday.”
Day three of the NCAA Track and Field Championships continues Friday with CU senior Shalaya Kipp competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase women's final (6:35 p.m., MDT). Kipp will be CU's lone competitor on the day, and sophomore Carrie Verdon will compete on Saturday in the 5,000-meter final (4:24 p.m. MDT).
