Golfers In 14th At Mackenzie Invitational
October 13, 2015 | Men's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened in decent enough fashion but had its issues in the afternoon round Monday, as the Buffaloes are in 14th place heading into the final round of Cal's 13th Annual Alister Mackenzie Invitational.
Host California, going for its seventh straight win in its own meet, carded a two-round score of 30-under par 538 to take a six-stroke lead on the field, with San Jose State leading a logjam from second through seventh place with a 24-under 544. Pepperdine (545), Arizona State (546) San Diego State (547) and San Francisco and Michigan (both at 549) are spaced just five strokes apart. Colorado is in at 4-over 572, well back in 14th place.
The Buffaloes were in a four-way tie for ninth at 7-under 277 following the morning round, 10 strokes behind first-round leader Pepperdine (267), but seemingly in the process of going low for the entire day. All five players scored rounds between 68 and 71, with 20 birdies against 13 bogeys and all the rest pars.
But it was a different story for CU the second time around the 6,734-yard, par-71 Meadow Club course layout. Collectively, the Buffs scored just nine birdies, with 23 holes over par – 17 bogeys and six doubles. It all added up to the Buffs posting an 11-over 295, the worst score in the 16-team field for either round.
Juniors Ethan Freeman and Jeremy Paul paced the Buffs Monday, finishing with even-par 142 scores but has the pair tied for 44th in the 80-man field. Paul had a team-high eight birdies, six in his morning round when he carded a 3-under 68, against eight bogeys with 20 pars. Freeman had seven birdies and seven bogeys with 22 pars for his rounds of 71-71.
Freshman Wilson Belk is tied for 57th after fashioning a 70-75—145 score; he had steady opening round with three birdies and 15 pars, but a couple of bad swings led to three double bogeys in his second 18, though he countered one of those with CU's lone eagle of the day.
Senior Philip Juel-Berg and freshman Ross Macdonald rounded out the CU action with 4-over 146 score, with the pair tied for 62nd. Macdonald matched Paul for CU's best score of the day with an opening 68, but struggled his second time around the track with six bogeys and a double with just a single bird. Juel-Berg opened with a 71 but had two doubles in round two.
"We had a couple of good rounds in the morning, but just had a really bad afternoon,” CU head coach Roy Edwards. “It's been a problem here in the early season, when we've had a bad round, we just haven't been able to get out course management under control to keep it a lower number. It's not for a lack of effort; we just need to keep working to get better. It's frustrating to everybody though.
Colorado was sixth in total pars (112), just five fewer than Cal's leading number of 117, but trailed the Bears by 20 in the birdie department (50-30).
San Jose State's Cody Blick leads the individual race through two rounds with a 13-under 129, which is good for a three-stroke lead over a trio of players, including Arizona State's Jon Rahm, who shot the day's low score of 63 in the second round.
“It's an easy golf course, we just didn't take advantage of all of our opportunities,” Edwards said. “That's obviously what we want to do tomorrow. Erase what happened today and go out and shoot what we know we are capable of, and that's a very low score. We have the confidence and know we are fully capable of it.”
The final round will be Tuesday morning with the teams playing off both the No. 1 and 10 tees; the Buffs begin play at 7:45 a.m. PDT off the back nine and will be paired with BYU, Hawai'i and San Diego.
