October 13, 2015 | Tennis
BOULDER -- Tennis's Tina Bokhua had one of the biggest wins in CU tennis history while Shay Fields racked up his first 100-yard receiving game for the football team, both earning CU Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 5-11.
Bokhua was the first player in coach Nicole Kenneally's 17 year career to be invived directly into the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She was the second player to actually play in the main draw and after a set back in her first match, she became the first player to win a match there, knocking off No. 5 Josie Kuhlman from Florida in the first round of the back draw.
She fell to No. 17 Carolina Doyle from Stanford in the first round and then in the quarterfinals of the back draw, she fell to No. 22 Catherine Harrison from UCLA, the defending Pac-12 Champion. But her win over Kuhlman is one of the best victories in CU history.
Fields finished the game at Arizona State with five catches for 103 yards. He had three catches that earned first downs and two on third down plays. Two more of his catches set up CU for a field goal and a touchdown in CU's 48-23 loss at Arizona State.
Cierra Simpson (volleyball) and Alexis Keating (women's golf) were also nominated for this week's honors.
Simpson picked up a career-high 31 digs in a thrilling five-set loss to top-ranked USC and also recorded 16 against No. 12 UCLA. She became the first Buff since 2011 to record 30 or more digs in a match. In addition, she did not commit a single reception error in two matches and received serve 52 times. To her and her teammates' credit, they did not allow the NCAA leader in service aces to aces them once in the match against USC.
Keating, a senior golfer, earned her eighth top 20 finish of her career last week in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational. She tied for 12th overall, shooting 75-76-74—225 or 9-over par. She carded her best 18-hole score of the tournament on the last day and the Buffaloes' best final round, posting 2-over par. Keating tallied 41 pars and a pair of birdies over the 56-hole event. As a team, the Buffs finished in eighth place.
