Ormeno Ruiz Advances To Mountain Regional Championship

LAS VEGAS – Junior Nuria Ormeno Ruiz advanced to the finals of the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional with two more decisive wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals here Saturday.
Ormeno Ruiz defeated Sonja Rodosevic from Denver, 7-5, 3-6, 2-1 ret in the quarterfinals and then rolled in the semifinals, taking down the Pioneer's Maureen Slattery, 6-4, 6-0. She is now 9-0 in singles action this season and has only lost two sets in those nine wins, improving to 18-2 in sets this season. She had blanked her opponent in a 6-0 set three times this season, all three coming at Regionals.
“This is a fantastic accomplishment for Nuria,” CU coach Nicole Kenneally said. “As a junior, she is coming into her own and playing great, aggressive but controlled, tennis. This is exciting for her and for our program.”
Ormeno Ruiz now has 47 career singles wins and 77 overall wins. This season, she leads the Buffs with 13 wins, including nine singles. In this tournament, five of her six wins have been in straight sets and six of the sets she's won by a score of 6-2 or better.
In Sunday's championship, Ormeno Ruiz will face Denver's Julia O'Loughlin, who defeated Nevada's Claudia Herrero and her teammate, Biance Mok, Saturday.
In back draw action, four Buffs were also in action Saturday. Kyra Wojcik defeated Wyoming's Miranda Talbert, 6-1, 6-0. Tina Bokhua fell to BYU's Savannah Ware, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7) and Jeannez Daniel fell to the Cowgirls' Magdalena Stencel, 6-2, 6-2. In the main back draw, senior Alex Aiello fell to New Mexico State's Erika Castillo Lopez, 6-3, 6-4.
