Evans Scores In 2-1 Setback At UCLA
October 23, 2015 | Soccer
LOS ANGELES - The University of Colorado soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss on Friday evening at UCLA at Drake Stadium.
The Buffs played a strong first half defensively as their back line kept the Bruins from putting a shot on goal.
"I thought our back four played really well tonight," Sanchez said. "We only allowed two shots on goal and one was a penalty kick. Madison Krauser was exceptional back there and also on the attack. Heather Ward did very well moving the ball forward."
The best scoring chance of the first half came in the 24th minute when Danica Evans ripped a shot from 30 yards out that was headed for the upper-right corner of the net, but a diving save kept the match scoreless.
UCLA got on the board less than seven minutes into the second half in the 52nd minute. Amber Munerlyn beat a defender on the right side of the box for a 1-on-1 with CU's goalkeeper Kate Scheele and finished the goal by shooting to Scheele's right.
The UCLA goal sparked the Buffs as they tried to answer right back. They took a pair of corner kicks just one minute later on an offensive attack. Joss Orejel then had a free kick from 25 yards out in the 56th minute, but her shot went just high.
Play went end-to-end as the Bruins had a scoring chance in the 59th minute when Kodi Lavrusky beat Scheele on a breakaway at the top of the box, but she was unable to keep enough balance to get a clean shot and missed the goal past the right post.
The Buffs countered a minute later and appeared to tie the match, but the goal was instantly waived off as Emily Paxton collided with the UCLA goalkeeper on the play, resulting in a yellow card.
The momentum continued to shift toward Colorado. In the 64th minute, Paxton had a great scoring chance from the center of the box. Her initial shot was saved and Olivia Pappalardo's shot off the rebound was deflected just over the crossbar to lead to a corner kick.
Evans finally put CU on the scoreboard in the 76th minute, heading in a corner from Orejel. It was Evans' fourth goal of the season and her second game-tying goal.
However, the match was tied for only 15 seconds as the Bruins drew a foul in the CU box following the kickoff. Annie Alvarado converted the ensuing penalty kick to give the lead back to UCLA at 2-1.
CU was strong on the attack over the next several minutes, but UCLA kept the ball in the Buffs' zone for much of the final 10 minutes.
The loss drops Colorado to 7-7-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the Pac-12, while UCLA improves to 7-7-1 and 3-3-1 in the Pac-12.
"Don't be fooled by their record," Sanchez said of UCLA. "They're a quality opponent. I thought we played well tonight against a good team. We scored a goal and created a lot of other opportunities."
CU will return to action on Sunday at No. 24 USC. That match will kick off at noon MT, 11 a.m. PT, and will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network. The Buffs have won their past three meetings with the Trojans.
