Women Golfers In Seventh At Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite

October 06, 2015 | Women's Golf

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Through 36 holes of play, the University of Colorado women's golf team sits in seventh place at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite.

The 15th-ranked Buffaloes posted nearly the same team score in each round, carding a 302-300—602 total at the Sahalee Country Club. Colorado was able to gain a little ground in the afternoon, moving up one spot from round one.

California is in first place with a 5-over par, 581 and has a comfortable 10-stroke lead over second place San Diego State at plus-15. Tournament host Washington is in third place at 18-over par while Pepperdine and Gonzaga are both tied for fourth at 21-over par.

“We didn't get off to a great start,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “I would say the second nine of our first round went a lot better. We had a pretty good second round going, but had a tough finish on a difficult par 3. Unfortunately we struggled with the last hole (No. 9 after teeing off the back side) and it was just a tough way to finish today.”

Leading the Buffs on the first day of the tournament was junior Esther Lee, who carded a 2-over par (71-75—146). After shooting 1-under through her first 18 holes, which included four birdies, Lee matched that same birdie count in the second round, but then struggled over her last two holes with a bogey and double-bogey. Despite the tough finish, Lee is tied for fifth place and is in good position heading into Tuesday, four strokes out of the top spot.

Freshman Brittany Fan had the biggest improvement among her teammates in the afternoon round, finishing five strokes better on the par 72, 6,039-yard course format. She was able to climb 15 spots on the leaderboard and is tied for 27th place. After recording just one birdie in the first round, Fan had three in the second and made 24 total pars. The Pearl City, Hawaii is 7-over par (78-73—151) after 36 holes.

Senior Alexis Keating is also in at 7-over par (75-76—151) and tied for 27th place with Fan. Keating shot 3-over in the morning with three bogeys and 15 pars and wrapped up the afternoon with a 4-over par effort. She knocked-in her lone-birdie of the day on the par-5, No. 2 and went on to finish the second round with 12 pars and five bogeys.

Tied for 40th place overall is senior Allie Zech, who was two strokes better in the second round and finished Tuesday with a 78-76—154 or 10-over par performance. Her second time out, Zech struggled off the bat, with a double-bogey on her first hole, No. 10. She settled down with four straight pars, but went to 4-over after back-to-back bogeys before sinking a birdie on No. 17 to earn one of those strokes back. She was 3-over par heading to the front side and posted 1-over par through her final nine holes, including two birdies over the final three.

Junior Natalie Vivaldi was up and down throughout each of the two rounds and carded an 11-over par, 78-77—155 through 36 holes. She drained five birdies on the day to go along with 17 pars and is in 48th place overall heading into the final round.

Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan leads the field at 2-under par and has a one-stroke advantage over Lucia Gutierrez, who is in at 1-under par. A pair of golfers are three strokes back with 1-over par scorecards and a group of four, which includes Lee is four strokes off the pace at 2-over par.

The tournament concludes on Wednesday with Colorado's first golfer set to tee-off at 9:30 a.m. MDT. The Buffaloes will play alongside San Francisco and fellow Pac-12 Conference opponent, Oregon State.
