Buffs Finish Eighth At Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational

October 07, 2015 | Women's Golf

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – The University of Colorado women's golf team played its final round here in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Wednesday and earned an eighth place finish. The tournament, hosted by Washington was played at the par 72, 6,039-yard Sahalee Country Club.

Over the final 18 holes, Colorado shot 313, en route to a 302-300-313—915 or 51 over-par final scorecard. One of the most difficult holes for the Buffs on the last day was the par 4, No. 4. The team shot a combined 5-over par.

San Diego State moved up one spot to win the tournament, posting an 892 or 28-over par team score, five strokes better than second place finisher California (897). Washington took third place (899). San Francisco finished fourth (904) and Pepperdine rounded out the top five (906).

“The course played tough today,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “It rained all day—kind of a typical Seattle day. Unfortunately, I don't think we handled the conditions too well, but it's good experience to play in rough weather conditions because certainly sometime in the spring we will run into it.”

Junior Esther Lee earned her third straight top 10 finish, tying for ninth place overall. In the final round, she pared her first nine holes on the back side, but then faltered some on the front, shooting 6-over par. A rare triple-bogey for Lee on her 11th hole set her back to 3-over par and then moved to plus-6 before the day was over. Lee concluded the tournament at 8-over par (71-75-78—224), while leading the Buffs with eight total birdies.

Senior Alexis Keating posted her best 18-hole score of the tournament on Wednesday and the Buffaloes' best final round, shooting 2-over par. Keating was solid on both sides of the course, carding 1-over par on the front and back. She was plus-1 through 11 holes and then went to 3-over with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 3 and 4, but finished strong with one birdie and four pars over the five remaining holes. She concluded the invitational at 9-over par (75-76-74—225) and moved up 15 spots to finish tied for 12th place overall. It was her best performance of the fall thus far in a 56-hole stroke play tournament.

Sophomore Brittany Fan shot 5-over par 77 in the last round and 12-over par, 78-73-77—228 for the two-day event. After playing her first nine holes, Fan was 3-over par and she wrapped up her round on the front side with a 2-over par effort. After a bogey on her 13th hole, she shot even the rest of the way in, with five consecutive pars. Fan's final 18 holes consisted of 13 pars and five bogeys. She finished tied for 22nd place.

Senior Allie Zech struggled in her last round and finished tied for 51st overall. She went 12-over par on Wednesday and posted a 78-76-84—238 final scorecard. Zech shot 5-over par on the front nine and 7-over on the back. It was an up and down-day for the Indian Wells, Calif. native, who ran into some trouble on the par 4s and 5s, shooting a combined 13-over par. She finished with six birdies for the tournament, fifth most among the field.

Junior Natalie Vivaldi also posted an 84 in the field round. The back side, where Vivaldi began the day, proved to be the more challenging side for her, shooting 8-over par. She played better on Nos. 1 through 9 where she shot 4-over par. Vivaldi tied for 55th place with a 23-over par (78-77-84—239) final 56-hole total.

Bianca Pagdanganan from Gonzaga earned medalist honors, shooting 217 or 1-over par. A pair of golfers from San Francisco, Vanessa Ha and Emelie Lundstrom finished took second and third place, respectively at 2-over and 3-over par. California's Hannah Suh finished fourth overall, just three strokes out of first place at 4-over par. In fifth place was Milagros Chaves from San Diego State and Wenyung Keh from Washington, who both shot 5-over par.

“I think what we take away from this is that we really have to concentrate on putting a little more as a team,” Kelly added.

The Buffaloes' will send a few individuals to this weekend's Ron Moore Invitational in Highlands Ranch, Colo., Oct. 9-11 and then will wait a few weeks before competing in their final team event of the fall season—the Pac-12 Preview in Hilo, Hawaii scheduled for Nov. 2-3.
