FORT COLLINS – Different season, same result.
The University of Colorado women's tennis team followed suit like the 28 teams before them, defeating in-state rival Colorado State, 7-0 for the 29th straight time, Sunday afternoon at the Fort Collins Country Club.
The Buffaloes (4-0) matched their best start in school history, tying the 1998-99 season after the first four matches to begin the season.
CSU falls to 1-1 on the season after opening on Saturday at home defeating UMKC, 5-2.
“We showed character as a team with three straight wins this weekend,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “It was good experience for the freshmen on the team showing what college tennis is all about. Now, we'll head home, get some rest and get ready to go back on the road later in the week against a nationally ranked opponent in Wichita State (No. 43). Overall, the team did a great job today, as well as this weekend.”
CU started the day taking two of three doubles points for the point. It's the fourth straight time the Buffaloes have secured the doubles point this spring season. Against the Rams, senior Ashley Tiefel and junior Alex Aiello had little trouble at No. 2 as they defeated the team of Mollie Cooper and Aina Hernandez Soler, 6-1, for their fourth straight tally as a tandem this spring.
The Buffaloes clinched the match at No. 3 with sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and freshman Kyra Wojcik edging Rebecca Costa and Madison Porter, 6-3 for their second win this season.
With a 1-0 lead, the Buffaloes kept their momentum going in singles play winning the first three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the team win at 4-0.
Ormeño Ruiz blanked Aina Hernandez Soler, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 to win her sixth straight singles match dating back to the fall season for a 2-0 team lead. It was also her eighth win of the year.
Julyette Steur was next, winning her No. 2 singles match in straight sets, defeating Adriana Wojakowska, 6-1, 6-0. Steur won her fourth straight for her team-best 10th win on the year. She jumps to No. 27 overall on the all-time singles list with her 53rd career triumph.
Freshman Tina Bokhua made it 4-0, clinching her second match in as many days at the No. 1 singles slot getting past Natalie Heffron, 6-2, 6-4. Bokhua won her fourth straight match and her eighth of the year.
CU rounded out the scoring to finish off the Rams for the final tally of 7-0 with three more singles wins, all in straight sets.
At the No. 4 through 6 positions, CU received victories from freshman Kyra Wojcik taking a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4, defeating Laia Hernandez Soler; Alex Aiello defeated Mollie Cooper at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-2 tally; and freshman Vitaliya Alkhovik defeated Maddie Buxton, 6-4, 6-3.
Wojcik improves to 6-1 during her initial season; Aiello has won three straight for her ninth win of the year; and Alkhovik won her first collegiate match as a Buff on the singles court.
Colorado travels to Wichita State this Friday, Feb. 6 (12 p.m., MST) to play the Shockers, then on Saturday will play UMKC on Feb. 7 (11 a.m. MST).
