Walker Wins Shot Put At Rocky Mountain Classic

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Freshman Mariah Walker recorded a personal best of 47 feet, 6.50 inches to win the shot put at the Rocky Mountain Classic on Friday, earning her first career collegiate victory.
The Colorado Springs, Colo. native defeated the second place finisher, Colorado State's Monet Jackson, by just three inches (47-3.50). The pair threw over two feet further than the rest of the competition as Danielle Tabb (Air Force) recorded a throw of 45-00 for third place. Prior to Friday's meet, Walker's PR had been 45-1.75.
Several Buffs competed in the weight throw at the meet. Sophie Hallam-Eames placed fifth (52-10.50), while Walker also took eighth (51-3.75). Kellie Lind earned ninth overall (50-2.50) and Madison Colletto placed 11th (34-5).
Brady Rutt led the men's team with a seventh place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 56-4.75. Matthew Denton was 10th (44-00.75) and Paden Gatlin placed 11th (43-7).
The Buffs were also in action at the Joe Davies Open in Golden, Colo. Abrianna Torres led the Buffs there with a runner-up finish in the long jump. She recorded a leap of 19-5.25, a season-best mark, on her third jump of the afternoon. Torres finished just shy of first place as Michelle Rigsby (Colorado School of Mines) jumped 19-7.
Mariah Slack placed fourth overall in the long jump (17-5.75), while Ewelina Pena and Michaela Wenning tied for seventh with a mark of 16-4.50. Claire Kazen took 13th overall (15-10.25).
Andrew Ghizzone was CU's top performer in the men's long jump, placing fourth with a jump of 22-10.50. Matt Walker also competed and placed 14th (18-4.50).
The Joe Davies Open will continue on Saturday.
