BOULDER – Sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz recorded the lone singles point in the University of Colorado's 6-1 women's tennis team loss to the University of Washington, Friday in Pac-12 Conference play at the South Campus courts.
The CU women's tennis team (9-7) remains winless in the Pac-12 with a 0-5 record, and now have lost six of their last seven matches. Washington continues to roll, winning its seventh straight and improving to 10-4 overall. The Huskies are now 2-0 in conference play.
“Washington is a quality team, a lot of depth; they came out and competed, top to bottom and deserved to win,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We have a group of girls who are coming out and fighting hard, they're Buffaloes, Buffalo warriors. You want them to compete from the first to the last point and representing the University to the highest of standards, and to the best of their ability.”
CU almost secured the doubles point, however the visitors edged the Buffs in two of the three positions by 8-6 and 8-5 margins, respectively.
Ormeño Ruiz and freshman teammate Kyra Wojcik won their No. 2 match taking an 8-6 winner over Angela Chen and Riko Shimizu. Ormeño Ruiz and Wojcik were down in the match on multiple occasions, trailing late at 6-5.
The CU tandem held serve to even the score at six, then broke UW's service game to take a 7-6 lead where Ormeño Ruiz subsequently closed out her service game with an ace for the win. Ormeño Ruiz and Wojcik won their first Pac-12 doubles match of the season and improve to 3-5.
The No. 3 team of senior Julyette Steur and freshman Erin Strachan rallied from a pair of deficits, 3-0 and 5-3 only to come back and tie each time. They lost 8-5; and at No. 1 doubles, senior Ashley Tiefel and junior Alex Aiello were also playing strong, rallying from multiple deficits (down 4-3 and 6-5), only to fall 8-6.
