Torres Places Eighth At Texas Relays

March 26, 2015 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas – After two grueling days competing on the track and in the field, University of Colorado junior Abrianna Torres came away with a eighth place finish in the women's heptathlon on Thursday at Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

Torres finished with a score of 5,321 points, which was just 36 points off her personal best. The time also puts her eighth on the NCAA outdoor performance list. Arkansas' Alexis Gochenour won the event with 6,027 points.

“Today was a very cold and windy day in Austin,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “We started out with 50 degrees at 11 a.m. and it finally crept over 60 degrees after the 800 at 2:15 p.m. The wind was at times favorable in the long jump, but it was not helpful in the javelin or 800. However, this group of women are the best in the NCAA and never failed to put it all on the line.”

The first event of the day was the long jump, which Torres had been looking forward to performing. She recorded a jump of 19-4.25 on her second of three attempts, which proved to be her best of the day and was fifth overall. The following event was the javelin and Torres came away with a seventh place finish with a toss of 110-10. The final event was the 800, which Torres saw a lot of improvement during the indoor season. She crossed the finish in 2:26.49, just a fraction away from her PR (2:25.09), and was 10th individually.

“Abrianna raced courageously in the 800,” Malone said. “I am thrilled with such a high score this early in the season. The fact that she placed eighth in this field of competitors and is now eighth in the nation speaks volumes for her level of training. Now, we need to go home, get back to work and tidy-up some areas before her next heptathlon at Mt. SAC next month. We are in a great place right now, but we have big goals this year and there is still work to be done.”

Several other Buffs were in competition at the meet on the second day. Sophomore Jaron Thomas led the Buffs in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 19th overall in 52.48. Sophomore Garrett Losty finished 57th (54.93) and freshman Isaiah Kaiser was 60th (55.41).

Texas Relays continues through Saturday.
