Buffs Give Strong Performance At Cowpoke Open

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Several members of the University of Colorado track and field team came away with brilliant performances on Friday at the Cowpoke Open, one of the last regular season meets this year.
Senior Alex Kizirian won the hammer throw with a toss of 211-10, which was just inches away from breaking his CU record of 212-4 from last weekend. Kizirian recorded the mark on his sixth and final throw of the day and defeated the runner-up, Colorado State's Tyler Schultz (209-4), by over two feet. Junior Brady Rutt finished the meet fifth overall with a mark of 190-00.
The women also had a great showing in the hammer throw with junior Sophie Hallam-Eames leading the way with a fifth place finish. She recorded a huge personal best mark of 177-9 on her first attempt, which put her third on CU's all-time performers list. Prior to today's performance, her best was 171-0. Not to be outdone in the hammer throw, senior Kellie Lind also had a personal record with a toss of 172-10, which placed sixth.
The personal records didn't stop there. In the discus, sophomore Makenzie Kline had a PR of 132-8 to place ninth and redshirt freshman Paden Gatlin also recorded of PR of 153-8 on the men's side for 11th overall.
Junior Ewelina Pena competed in a couple of events at the meet and did very well. She tied her PR in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.21 for seventh overall, and recorded a PR in the long jump with a leap of 16-6. Freshman Michaela Wenning also notched a PR in the 100-hurdles, finishing in 15.75.
Several members of CU's distance program will be racing on Saturday at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif. The meet is the last one before the Pac-12 Championship, which starts May 9-10 with the combined events. UCLA will host the meet.
