May 02, 2015 | Track and Field

STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Colorado track and field team came away with many brilliant distance performances on Saturday at the Payton Jordan Invitational, positioning themselves well for postseason competition.

Junior Pierce Murphy became the ninth fastest CU performer in the 5k as he raced to a time of 13:37.05 to place sixth in the second section of the 5,000-meter run. It was a very close race with the top nine crossing the finish within four seconds of each other. Thomas Joyce (California) won the heat in 13:34.42.

Sophomore Ben Saarel and senior Jake Hurysz raced in the third heat of the 1,500 and were just shy of their personal bests. Saarel, who was running his first race in a CU uniform this outdoor season, finished fourth with a season best time of 3:41.90. Hurysz also recorded a season best with a time of 3:42.56 for fifth.

Many of CU's distance athletes racing on Saturday night earned personal records. Junior Ammar Moussa placed third in the fourth heat of the 1,500, finishing in 3:42.62; while junior Morgan Pearson placed fifth in the same heat with a time of 3:43.31. The Buffs' redshirt freshmen also lopped time of their PRs in the 1,500. Zach Perrin, who was in the fifth section, finished in 3:43.81, while Adam Peterman placed second in the seventh section with a time of 3:47.22.

The women also had some great performances. Junior Maddie Alm shaved almost three seconds of her PR as she clocked in at 4:21.51 for seventh place in the fourth section and senior Sara Sutherland finished the second heat with a time of 4:23.06 for 12th place. Redshirt freshman Erin Clark and freshman Kaitlyn Benner both raced in the fifth heat and also came away with PRs. Clark recorded a time of 4:23.86 for seventh place, while Benner finished in 4:25.32 for ninth. Abby Levene placed 11th overall in the sixth section with a time of 4:27.34, yet another PR.

Junior Connor Winter came close to his PR in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he finished ninth in the third section with a time of 8:56.06.

The Pac-12 Championships are next for the Buffs. The combined events will be contested May 9-10, while the remainder of the events will follow May 16-17 in Los Angeles. UCLA will serve as the host.
